A interesting debate

Alright, here it is. Is England a country? I think it is Britain which is a country and it is made up of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern
Ireland. So, it has got to be Great Britain playing international cricket, not England. That is, the side should consist of players from Wales, Scotland and N.Ireland as well.

It does. The side ought to be called the MCC. Robert Croft is of course Welsh. Peter Such was Scottish as is Gavin Hamilton who has played for both England and Scotland.

West Indies isn't a country.

Technically nor were Australia, New Zealand or India when they got Test status.

You're right, England is not a country, but tradition has almost always been that the nations that make up Great Britain compete separately.

what do you mean england is not a country?!! and you have the english rose as your picture too! England has it's own national anthem, so therefore is a country. Also, take into account that the queen is the queen of england, not britain, and we all have our own football, rugby, etc. teams. so there

The Queen is actually the queen of Scotland. In 1603 James VI kindly agreed to rule over you English as well. England is a country joined to Scotland by the Act of Union of 1707 and to Ireland by the Act of Union of 1801. However the English cricket team is a British team.
Incidentally Andrew's avatar is for Lancashire not England!

England is not a country.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a country. England is part of that country.... quick test what is the English national anthem?

And that is the Lancashire red rose.

i am not from england but i will take a guess.."God bless/save the Queen"

I thought it was swing low sweet chariot by the way the english carried on after the rugby....

England have a double standard. They toured S.A. during arpetheid (is that how you spell it) yet refuse to play when the same racism is being directed towards whites in Zim. Maybe england should look at themselves before critisizing others.

P.S. Swing Low is popular song like Whaltizing Matilda.

The England teams that toured South Africa during Aparteid were unofficial teams. The players who went on thbose tours were banned from international cricket. Please note that teams from Australia, Sri Lanka and the West Indies all toured during the 80s.

As everyone knows the ICC gave points in the world cup to Zimbabwe and Kenya when England and New Zeland refused to play in the countries.

With Zimbabwe threatening to pull out of their tour to England and India almost certainly not touring Pakistan, should those series be awarded to England and Pakistan for the ICC test championship?

I think they should otherwise it would be double standards from the ICC.

What do other people think?
i agree but i dont think it should have come to this in the first place.

points should be awarded if the playing condtios are considered safe by icc...like in zims case u cant blame eng but pak is pretty safe now but that is for icc to decide

people die over pak v india games. wheather at the ground or not

When I made the topic, general cricket didn't even exist!

There is a 10 year schedule in place by the ICC, but I'm not sure how official it is.
It's just a platform as to what matched can be played...

Some of the matches are official (up to the Champions Trophy in 2006 which will be held in India; the World Cup in 2007 is there as well for March/April, and it might even be official to that date. Basically, it's a scheduling system that teams will probably go through unless there is a change made by the ICC or the team's respective cricketing boards. Like in some years, there will be 5-6 month gaps where India won't play cricket at all! That is why the scheduling isn't 100% confirmed. I know that a lot of you will say that India didn't play for 5 months this year, but the BCCI can't allow such things to happen every 2-3 years...)

If Zimbabwe threaten to leave, they should lose the points, just like England did (that too it was the World Cup, which holds a higher populairty than the ICC rating system)...
