Its blowing out a lot of hot air, and when I say hot, I mean so hot that I can barely put my finger near the vent at the back. Its also very hot at the top of my laptop, above my keyboard.

when using your laptop Where abouts do you use it? on a desk or something?
Im sure you could get a fan rest thingy my mum has one and it keeps her laptop cool but im sure it is normal unless the exhausts are being blocked? but otherwise it should be normal
The fan is being blocked or it needs cleaning. Hard Task. It's happened to mine recently, the fan can't cool the laptop down so mine turns its self off to cool down. It's due to the heat in the room and also if you are say by placing it on your lap or on cushions.
I use some little rubber things (actually used to measure the accuracy of holes in gearing precision drilling), which lifts the back of the laptop up. I tried using my laptop at a funny angle (base = 45 degrees) and it went insane. Lift up the back of the laptop slightly, so it can "breathe". I've not cleaned the fan/extractor point in 3 years.
I think if your worried get a cooling thingy xD But yes sureshot is also correct with angling the laptop but the table also isnt for cooling laptops its just so you can have it resting that could be why its hot also because they dont think about heat issues
