With Australia struggling at 128/5, the Sri Lankans would have really fancied their chances of an upset victory over their powerful hosts. But Michael Bevan and Andrew Symonds simply refused to give up, and kept battling on regardless of the circumstances. They put up an awe-inspiring 143 runs for the 6th wicket and had all but won the match for Australia until Bevan's dismissal in the penultimate over of the match by Muttiah Muralitharan for a run-a-ball 83.
Chaminda Vaas, tasked with defending just 2 off the final over started off brilliantly with four dot balls on the trot before Mitchell Starc could finally get bat on ball to level the scores, leaving Australia needing just 1 to win off the final ball of the match.
Andrew Symonds stuck it down the ground for a boundary to bring up a thrilling 4-wicket victory for the Australians with one match left to play in the Super Sixes.
