Oh ok.
They *did*, but then there was a lot more to it. Nothing to do with that review.
Further to my initial post, I still like the game. I'm an avid tennis player and had a real hit with a friend yesterday, then we went back to my place and had a go at this game. We enjoyed it and ended up having a fun 3 set match. It's certainly not broken or unplayable, it's perfectly playable according to normal tennis rules and strategies. The main issue for me is how slow players are to turn and run back to the middle so you end up not being able to get the ball and go for shots that in real life players would get to and make an attempt. Also drop shots appear to be too good and impossible to get to so I stopped doing them after a few as it didn't seem fair. Came across one glitch with the rules. I had a first serve that was called out and my friend returned it. I challenged as I thought it looked pretty close and it was in fact in so won the challenge. According to the normal rules of tennis we should have replayed the serve as it was returned and was not an ace, but as a result of the challenge it gave me the point. Nice touch that they have added the odd wrong call you can challenge which is a bit of realism, but just need to get the rules right on what happens when there's a successful challenge.
I don't think Big Ant or Ross "paid" anyone for the review. It's just that the optics don't look good at all. As for reviews, bad reviews happen all the time which don't reflect reality or what the users truly feel about the game/device. After all IGN was forced to fire their reviewer for giving a bad review/score (7/10 which was still not that bad) to Nintendo Switch after Nintendo Switch became a hit and users disagreed with the review. I'm sure there must be a lot of similar instances for game reviews as well. And this will always happen as reviews are one person or team's opinion about a game, which is almost always subjective and not an exact science.
Eurogamer failed to give Horizon Zero Dawn even a 'Recommended', let alone an 'Essential' which caused a lot of debate. Given it's the only game I've ever bothered to Platinum, let alone a technical showcase of not just PS4 Pro, but PS4 itself I fail to see how it can't get at least a 'Recommended'. Obviously people have different tastes, but why would you review an open world action game if that's not your thing?
The fact that THAT AO Tennis review was so fair off pitch to nearly every other review does leave a sour smell in the nostril. I tried doing a bit of amateur detective work (basically looked up reviewers LinkedIn for any dubious links to BA) but nothing turned up. Perhaps he just really enjoyed the 'challenge' of it all?
I don't blame the reviewer at all. It's more than clear the bloke was an avid tennis fan and was waiting for a tennis game and in his excitement gave the game an inflated score. But surely someone at Big Ant should've said "Yeah let's hold on a sec and let's not reference this review coz it looks as if it's written by a homer".
Bit harsh
So the poster of the original 8.5 review and then turned it down to a 7 has updated his review again.....

He apparently changed his opinion after listening to his brother!
The fact that ba came out and praised this review amongst all the sub five out of 10 reviews from professional gaming sites ......and the level of the reviewer is made clear when this guy goes and re reviews after a chat with his brother........I mean its all a bit barrelscraping ......
I did not realise that I was part of a small minority that somehow became an expert at the game. Well I seem to be the only one that can beat the A.I. in Legends difficulty because loads of people cannot even play the game.
Even my brother who has finished very hard games like Nioh and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy still cannot get used to the controls. Even after playing it for five days straight, he's still bad and I have yet to see any major improvements from him.
I feel Big Ant Studios might have to make the controls easier somehow. I was lucky as I got used to the physics and control scheme faster than most. I'm an outlier because I can beat my brother at Madden 18 even though I don't know the rules of American Football and he does!
That review was written by a 12 year old. I rest my case with the following quote from the "review"...
This so called "Review" is to an actual review what the movie "The Room" is to an actual movie.
