Asia Cup 2022 - Sri Lanka (UAE)

Oh well if Kohli can actually bowl a couple of overs in a pinch he might actually outlive Rahul with his usefulness…

Something is seriously wrong with Rahul though. It feels like he can never dominate all three formats at the same time. The tentative way he plays is ill-suited to a modern T20 side. It is pretty clear that fitness and off the field reasons are to explain Shaw‘s absence. This bloke was supposed to be our next test opener and the fourth choice opener in white ball cricket around 2-3 years ago. Since then he has been exposed by his technique, has gone back and reworked his game slightly and has also dominated domestic cricket with a record breaking season included. Yet there is no talk of him being selected and we’ve got even Tripathi leapfrogging him.

Jesus that was a horrible over from Avesh. We’re doing the lad no good by playing him now, there‘s a good bowler in him but this isn’t the right time. Let him get back to the basics and rework his game before getting more opportunities.

Arshdeep has got to be the most average left-arm 'fast'-bowler I have seen since Rahat Ali...

I personally feel he is a defensive bowler like Bumrah first and foremost and unlike the latter he is also rather one-dimensional. A very accurate pacer who backs himself confidently but if you can line him up he is going to get tonked. Still a better option than most of the alternatives.

I do think KL Rahul's problems are pretty deep rooted and its tough to see how he can get out of this mental rut. He is not even the captain here and yet he bats like this! Especially when there are so many hitters waiting down the order (eg. Surya Kumar, Pant, Karthik, Jadeja). If you cant open up and take risks against a side like Hong Kong (no disrespect meant to them), then there is something really wrong.

I really liked how Kohli opened up later and got into the flowing mode. Did he get bogged down by Rahul? I feel Kohli is getting more and more classical where its becoming tough to bat him anywhere other than opening. Maybe its not a bad idea to have Kohli and Rohit open for us in the T20 WC this year. There is the potential of some big decisions being made post the T20 WC this year (maybe Kohli and Rohit's T20I retirements - with the next T20 WC in 2024). But as of now, Kohli would be best served to open the batting with Pant and Surya floating between 3 and 4, Hardik, DK and Jadeja at 5, 6 and 7.
