Aussie_Ben91's Modern-Day Fantasy Test Draft

Well, it's been a long day at work...

Pick: Michael "Underrated" Clarke
Explanation: Since he made his way back into the Australian team Pup has averaged 56, scored a century every 5 or 6 innings and done decent work with the ball, too. At 28 years of age he's only just entering his prime, and unless his back gives out he's going to score an absolute mountain of runs before he retires.

Clarke gives me a fourth flexible batsman who can tailor his game to different match situations and turn his arm over when required. I'm trying to pack my side full of these guys because Warne's captaincy thrives on unorthodox tactics and I want to give him as much flexibility as I can.

1. Gautam Gambhir
2. Virender Sehwag
3. Rahul Dravid
4. Mahela Jayawardene
5. Michael Clarke
6.
7.
8. Wasim Akram
9. Shane Warne (c)
10. Muttiah Muralitharan
11. Ian Bishop

I'll let that picture go, but nothing more than that in future, please.

Oops, that's not even Michael Clarke! They're both so girly-looking it's hard to tell them apart sometimes. ;)

Mark Taylor - Averaged over 40 against every country bar the West Indies, where he more then made up with an average of 79 against a Pakistani attack featuring Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Shoaib Akhtar & Saqlain Mushtaq. He wasn't the most flamboyant of batsman but one that could hang in and do the tough yards against quality seam bowling, which he did so often throughout his career. Not only a fair batsman but one of the best slips fieldsmen of alltime, with vice-like hands. Now all of my top 5 batsman have played over 100 Tests and my openers both have triple-centuries under their belt.

1. Mark Taylor
2. Matthew Hayden
3. Jacques Kallis
4. Inzamam-ul-Haq
5. Steve Waugh (c)
6.
7.
8. Anil Kumble
9. Jason Gillespie
10. Shane Bond
11. Allan Donald

Pick: Chris Cairns
Explanation: I've been tempted to pick this guy for a few rounds now, and so with the final few picks coming into play, and with a few other options for my 2 final picks, Cairns had to come out now. Cairns, I think, is one of the most under-rated players from this era. With a Test batting average of 33.53 with 5 hundreds and 22 fifties, plus his 218 wickets at 29.40, he's got a very good record. He also helps to fill the all important all-rounder spot at number 7, giving my team very good balance.

Manee, you have the next two selections.

Pick: Saeed Anwar
Explanation: Few batsmen have come into Test cricket with a pair, come back four years later and combined aesthetically pleasing opening batting with consistency as well as Saeed Anwar. Anwar averaged 45.52 in Test cricket, playing for the majority in the 1990s. Indeed, as has been the hallmark of my XI, he excelled against the top opposition of the generation, Australia, with 886 runs at 59.06, each of the three centuries made against an attack containing the formidable opening pairing of Mcgrath and Fleming.

Pick: Harbhajan Singh
Explanation: One of the criminally underrated players of the modern generation, Harbhajan Singh is one of the few bowlers in the history of the game to win a 3 match Test series singlehandedly, as he did in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2001, with 32 wickets at 17.03 with other Indian bowlers taking just 14 wickets in the series. However, Harbhajan is far from a one hit wonder as he has recently learned to adapt his game to different conditions, playing the role of a defensive spinner getting through the lion share of overs and yet, showing that he can still play the attacking role, as in his 6/63 in Hamilton, just a few months back, shows. His 171 wickets in 32 matches also shows his major part in many Indian victories over the years - he may be a dick, but an adapative, smart match winner nonetheless.

1. Gary Kirsten
2. Saeed Anwar
3. Ricky Ponting (capt)
4. Kevin Pietersen
5. VVS Laxman
6. Adam Gilchrist (wk)
7. Andrew Flintoff
8. Harbhajan Singh
9.
10. Dale Steyn
11. Glenn Mcgrath

Pick: Chaminda Vaas
Explanation: I guess I have a thing for these underrated cricketers. Vass was/is one of the top bowlers of his generation. The only quick bowlers besides the legendary Imran Khan to take 14 wickets in a test in the subcontinent. He never relied on pure pace but on his ability to out think the batsman and his ability to bowl a handful of deliveries. He is also a bit of a all-rounder, averaging 24.48 in his 110 tests.

1. Greame Smith
2. Andrew Strauss
3. Michael Hussey
4. Mohammad Yousuf
5. Brian Lara
6. Andy Flower+
7. Chaminda Vaas
8.
9. Makhaya Ntini
10. Curtly Ambrose
11. Courtney Walsh

also hating on mrtwistis big time for taking Bishop

Dare are you going to bat Vaas at seven, or find a proper all-rounder?

And Hussey at three?

I figured you'd be picking him soon if I didn't get to it quickly ;)

I thought he would be one of those under the radar guys and I could get him a bit later but then you go and pick him. Excellent pick, Bishop in his prime was like Bond nowadays.

I will see whats available in the last round but Vaas is more than capable of batting there and with 5 out of 6 batsman in front of him averaging 50+ I would have no problem with him batting there.

As for Hussey he used to open and then batted at #4 behind Ponting and was successful at both. So him batting at #3 isn't big stretch and Im sure he is more than capable of it.

Mrtwisties?

Great idea, this.

At first glance, it looks like mrtwisties has the best team. Great spinners, great captaincy, and great bowling.

You've got to love Sehwag and Gambhir opening at the top (or as I call them, "Thunder and Lightning" )
