Kallis Plays Lone Hand As McGrath Bags 500

South African number 3 batting hero Jacques Kallis was all that stood in the way of a huge deficit for the home side as they continued their clash with Australia at the New Wanderers stadium today.

(Jacques Kallis was the star of the day however Glenn McGrath's 4 wickets enabled him to become part of cricketing history)

Kallis, who has proved to be the rock to which the sometimes fragile South African batting lineup has been built around, played an uncharacteristically flashy innings as he compiled 134 runs from only 154 balls as he guided his team to 10/245. Still trailing Australia by 80 runs.

However the South African fans had little to cheer about early, as paceman Glenn McGrath celebrated his 500th wicket when he bowled Herschelle Gibbs to become only the 2nd fast bowler and 4th bowler in history to reach the mark.

The tourists will now plan to continue on with the strong start in a bid to go 1 up in the series.

Oh and thanks for the mention too! I look forward to seeing this story progress! Keep up the very nice presentation.

brettlee you did guess right the only problem was that kallis smashed 134 against me. gillespie got slaughtered (perhaps kasper or tait for the next match if it continues) and warne bowled average but i think he will come into his own with those footmarks on late day 4 and day 5. thanks for posting keep it up. updates expected this afternoon australian time. cheers

Nel Leads South African Fightback

South African medium quick bowler Andre Nel lead his homeside to an impressive fightback as they attempt to save the 1st Standard Bank test match against Australia at the New Wanderers stadium in Johannesburg.

Nel, who came into the attack as the first change bowler, captured the wickets of openers Matthew Hayden (2) and Justin Langer (10) as the tourists slumped to 2/21 and later 5/58 as they look to build on their 80 run lead carried over from the first innings.

Nel 2/8, Shaun Pollock 1/38, Nicky Boje 1/8 and Makhaya Ntini 1/12 all contributed with the ball as Australia slipped to be 5/72, with Simon Katich (18*) and Adam Gilchrist (5*) the not out batsmen.

However there may be some positive signs to come out of the opening overs from the Australian point of view, with Nicky Boje getting plenty of spin from the ball, which may prove cruicial if Australia are looking to protect a low total below 250 with Shane Warne able to bowl last into the footmarks.

Good going by SA, Gilchrist needs a big score to give his bowlers something to bowl at, Wrane should have some fun is Bojes extracting spin as there not in the same league, great presentation as always!

Australia Collapse As Pollock and Boje Run Riot

The Australian middle and lower order collapsed at the hands of Shaun Pollock and Nicky Boje as they look to extend on their 80 run lead in the first test at Johannesburg.

If the tourists felt uneasy with the score at 5/75 with Gilchrist and Katich still at the crease, they will now be in panic mode as the lower order crumbled to be 9/104, loosing 4 wickets for only 1 run. In a bizarre turn of events the game may have swung in favour of South Africa for the first time in the match.

Adam Gilchrist was the first to go, having been squared up by Shaun Pollock and edging the ball to Rudolph who took a brilliant catch at gully, all in all a great peice of bowling and planning as on off stump has been identified as one of Gilchrists weaknesses.

Simon Katich went only 3 balls later when Nicky Boje got one to jump and spin off a good length which led to Katich edging the ball to wicketkeeper Mark Boucher, Australia loosing their 2 strongest batsmen in the lower order and Australia in trouble.

Shane Warne came and went next over when Shaun Pollock also got one to bounce a bit more and Warne played forward and popped one up to Andre Nel who took a great catch at silly mid off.

Brett Lee was the last to go when he attempted to sweep his way out of trouble and skied the ball to short leg.

Will Glenn McGrath and Jason Gillespie be able to do enough to give Australia a competitive target? Will Australia be able to dismiss South Africa with such a low total? Only time will tell.
