Leg Spinning sensation Shane Warne continued to lead his team in their fightback to win the test match between South Africa as he picked up the in from Herchelle Gibbs only 3 overs before lunch to leave the game in a delicate position.
Having picked up Jacques Kallis from bowling in the rough patch from around the wicket earlier, Warne continued around the wicket to bog down and contain the aggresive strokeplayer Gibbs. Gibbs, with confidence full high and timing the ball very well having made 35 and faced 135 balls, chanced his arm by dancing down the wicket and trying to lift Warne over mid on to break the shackles of the tight bowling.
This played straight into the hands of Warne, who beat Gibbs through the air by tossing one up, which found the rough patch and bounced to clip the top of leg stump. This crucial wicket leaves the game in a delicate position with the Proteas needing 143 runs to win with 7 wickets in hand.
Lunch - Day 4 South Africa 3/68
H. Gibbs 35 (135)
J. Rudolph 8* (65)
B. Dippenaar 0* (11)
28 Year old South African left handed batsman Ashwell Princed smashed 58 to put his side within an arms reach of victory in the first test against Australia at the New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on day 4 of the test.
The talented strokemaker came to the crease at a difficult position after Jacques Rudolph edged a Shane Warne quicker ball to Justin Langer at short cover with the first ball after lunch to leave the Proteas at a difficult position at 5/74.
However Prince and wicket-keeper batsman Mark Boucher combined for a partnership of 90 runs as South Africa edged ever closer to a first up victory.
Prince (58) drove and pulled all of the Australian bowlers to all parts of the field while Boucher (33*) played the ball around into the gaps and punished Shane Warne.
South Africa now need only 32 runs to win with 4 wickets in hand and have Boucher and Shaun Pollock (13*) at the crease as well as capable batsman Nicky Boje to come. It appears that a mammoth effort from Warne and company will be needed and that time is ticking down on Australias first defeat since loosing to India in India.
Mark Boucher proved the hero for South Africa with a matchwinning 57 not out as the home side edged out a nail-biting victory over Australia to go one up in the Standard Bank test series.
Boucher, all rounder Shaun Pollock (13) and left arm spinner Nicky Boje (9*) guided their side to a 3 wicket victory that kept the home fans in a state of anxiety as Warne and McGrath tightened the screws in an attempt to freeze up the game and cause mistakes by the batsmen. However nothing could stop Boucher, who plundered the bowling both sides of the wicket and give the home side a major mental advantage over Australia with only 1 test and 3 One Day Internationals remaining in the tour.
Nicholas - Hello from a beautiful Johannesburg where we have just witnessed one of the closest and remarkable tests in recent memory. Australia looked in complete control with a 1st innings lead after days 1 and 2 of the test before South Africa hit back on day 3 with the ball and managed to hang on with the bat to win with 3 wickets left. What a great 4 days cricket.
With me I have the two captains for the teams and the man of the match for the game. First we might start with the unfortunate captain Ricky Ponting.
Ponting - Hello Mark
Nicholas - Well Ricky a lost opportunity really in this game. You appeared in complete control with a healthy lead after the first innings. What happened?
Ponting - Well this is one i would prefer to forget to be honest. We were going very well but out response with the bat in the second innings was aweful. Obviously the pitch didnt play as well later in the match as we can see from both sides performances, they were 7 down, but we should have made 250 easily on that wicket.
Nicholas - Obviously there are a few negatives in the game but what about your bowling and Justin Langers century?
Ponting - Yes Lang batted well but he needed support. Warne, Brett and Glenn all bowled very well and Dizzy (Gillespie) held his own. But we needed to dominate a little more with the bat for that to take affect.
Nicholas - Well thanks for your time Ricky and good luck in the next match
Nicholas - And now for the winning captain Graeme Smith. Graeme its always nice being on the winning team but especially against Australia.
Smith - Oh it is Mark. Its a credit to the boys. We hung in their and while im sure many had their money allready collected on an Australian win we new that we could still be competitive. I thought we bowled very well and very tightly in both innings to limit them in the first and then to really rip through them in the second innings and it really is just a credit to them.
Nicholas - And to go 1 up in the series. That has to be a huge boost?
Smith - Its always great getting a lead early and this way we have the home ground advantage aswell. Im sure the Aussies will come back hard at us next match but we now have that belief that we can compete and win against the best in the world.
Nicholas - Who were your best this match?
Smith - Well obviously Jacques Kallis played great with the bat in the first and then Ashwell Prince and Mark Boucher in the chase but for me Shaun Pollock just bowled his heart out all match. He just kept tearing in and giving it his all for his country.
Nicholas - Well thanks for your time and best of luck till next time Graeme
Nicholas - Well theres the captains for you. Now i have with me the man of the match in what has been a truely great test match. Well this man has been selected due to his saving century in the first innings which means it is none other than Jacques Kallis who top scored for the Proteas with 134.
Kallis - Hello Mark
Nicholas - Well Jacques very well done on that knock of 134 in the first innings. You really single handedly saved your team with the team total only being 245.
Kallis - Well you need people to stand up against a team like Australia. Luckily that was me in the first innings and Ashwell and Mark in the second dig. But look im just over the moon we beat the world champions but the job isnt near finished yet.
Nicholas - Well congratulations again and enjoy your $10,000 curtousy of Standard Bank, the bank of South Africa
Well played South Africa. Prince played a crucial knock in the 2nd innings, and Boucher guided them home. Also Jacques Kallis yet again proved why is rated as one of the best players in the world with that MOM 134 in the 1st innings.
This has been a great test match, and I am looking forward to the rest of the series now.
thanks guys. over 100 posts for 2 matches cricket is pretty good. thanks for posting. next match will be coming soon. if anyone has any suggestions to make the story better or things you would like to see please let me know. thanks for posting. keep it up
The Australian test cricket team arrived in Cape Town ahead of the 2nd and final test match of the Standard Bank series against South Africa, looking to avoid their first series loss in over a year.
Following the narrow 3 wicket loss at the hands of the Proteas, coach John Buchanan hinted that there may be some changes to the lineup for the final test.
(Adam Gilchrist, Shane Warne, Ricky Ponting, Matthew Hayden practice their slip catching at training ahead of the Cape Town test match)
"Depending on what the conditions throw at us then yes there may be some changes. It has been pretty good dry heat here lately but you can never tell with cricket because pitches can turn out to be different to what you expect"
-John Buchanan
The team were quick to head to the training ground to adjust to the new field and attempt to get some form under their belts before the crucial clash. 1st innings centurian Justin Langer indicated that he still had faith in his team
"As i have said all along this side is great at bouncing back. Playing in South Africa is always a challenge, they have a really great team and the conditions make it just that bit tougher. Im sure we will produce our high standard next match."
- Justin Langer
(Stuart MacGill, Michael Kasperwicks and Shaun Tait could all be in the running for a call up to the test team)
