Australia's Greatest ODI Team

Yeah, and that was when Waugh averaged in the mid 20s wasn't it? Hayden's average has always been over 40 while Waugh struggled to ever to get it over 40.
Hayden averaged 26 after 13 games, at which point the selectors lost patience and dropped him for six years- if he was good enough to continue to play as a youngster his averages would be skewed by that as well. Not a good comparison- Waugh averaged over 44 as an opener

Waugh'ta mistake to make. ;)
Not your best effort

Mark Waugh deserves his spot..he was a more aggressive batsman since he opened the batting, he averages 3 less? so what, he bowled and his fielding(which is important in ODI's) was far superior to Hayden's

not to mention he shared a far better opening partnership with Gilly...him being a lazy cricketer is just opinion of the fact he played so gracefully....he often scored fighting hundreds and he scored a lot of ODI hundreds 11 more than Hayden and he scored 50 ODI 50's compared to Haydens 29

and a bowling average of 34.56 is not ordinary for someone who also opens the batting with a batting average of 44 (as an opener)

Hayden was a mere 21 year old who had played probably around 9-10 List-A games when he debuted in ODI cricket whilst Waugh was around 26-27 years of age and yet Hayden's ODI average was still around the same mark as Waugh's.
He opened the batting when he was in his prime whilst when at there prime, Hayden had to deal with the best bowlers in their prime with the new ball when he was 21 which drags his average down. Those statistics are vague anyway, the test statistics really show off who was the better batsman and by some distance.

It's not Waugh's graceful shots that made him look so lazy, it's the fact that I think if he put in more effort then he would've been an allot more successful batsman then he was shown to be. His batting though definately doesn't come into the same class as Hayden's. It could've been better, he could've come close Ponting.

His bowling is nothing on rave on about either. Was used as a last resort.

Waugh made his debut when he was 23, both had around 2 years before their ODI debut so no excuses for lack of experience.
Hayden in the ODI arena feels like he has been made rather than a natural player like Waugh.

As for Waugh's bowling before his injury his medium pacers were more than handy.

also Mark Waughs average for World Cups is a mere 53...he might have been lazy but he lifted for the big occasions...

as an ODI opener, Mark Waugh looked comfortable...he was aggressive, had a high average and he clicked with his partner Gilchrist...

having said that i do agree Hayden is a better batsman overall and Junior would never come near him in making an all time Australian Test side...but Mark Waugh was better in ODI's
