Given their meteoric rise in the T20s, do they really desevre to be ranked No.4 ? A team ,which had not yet broken into the rankings, now finds itself at No.4 by virtue of having beaten Ireland in 3 matches.

This brings me to discuss a few questions:

1. Is the ranking system credible ?
2. Does the ranking system even take into account the opposition ?
3. In a case where BD is allowed to play Affiliates, considering that they were granted a 3 match series v Afghan, Ire and say Scotland- had they won all these 9 matches, would they have been ranked No.1 ?

The link to this is here.

Look its not only T20 rankings even the Test and ODI rankings are open to debate, remember the Indians had been number one test team for a while yet they played few tests, the ICC is just corrupted in all facets of the game these days and the prime reason for this is due to the amount of control the BCCI have over the game.

I have never been a fan of the system anyway. To me ,there has been only one Number 1 side which has been Australia given their sheer dominance. I do not wish to congratulate Team India for having attained No1. The system definitely has its flaws.

India became No1 despite not having won in SAF or AUS. However, that is not what we are discussing here. My main point is -How can BD reach No4 when they were ranked 12. Just by virtue of their victory over Ireland-it does not guarantee them a top ost.

Additionally, if the T20 rankings are so flawed, its better to do away with them completely.

Finally, what is your problem with India and the BCCI ? It seems like you love bashing us up - Even in the India v NZL thread, you have directly vented out towards the BCCI and have gone the distance by saying that we corrupt the game and ought to stop playing it. Whats your problem, man ?

We were never in the rankings until the 2nd T20 when we were ranked 6th. You just have to give the T20 rankings more time like the test and odi rankings (which I think are perfect) because teams haven't played enough matches yet.

^Exactly, having rankings for T20 is going to end up with dumb results because of the lack of matches. Bangladesh only got into the rankings after the 2nd Ireland match as you say, where they appeared at #6. But then to move from 6th to 4th based on 1 more win over the 11th ranked Ireland shows a small dataset can make for silly results. Beating Ireland shouldn't move them up AT ALL.

I've been a supporter of the Test and ODI rankings, I think they do a pretty good job. They would be better if the schedules were balanced ie. all teams played each other the same number of times. But rankings for T20 just seems pointless.

Does the ICC use these rankings to determine the groups for the World T20 ? I was under the impression that they picked lots and seeded the teams in order to slot them into groups.

I am not against BD moving up. Had it come against a couple of whitewashes v say England and SRL, even then, them moving upto No7 is probably alright. Beating Ireland when you aint even in the rankings.

So tomorrow, when the World T20 is expanded to a 16 team affair, should a Fiji or China defeat Afghanistan, they might as well break into the rankigns and move upto No5.:noway

The positions of the previous T20 WC will be taken into consideration, AFAIK.

ICC needs to understand that T20 format is for entertainment purpose and take out ICC rankings. The rankings will definitely go haywire considering the nature of the format and the number of games being played. If the ICC rankings continue, don't get astonished if Minnows dominate because they play more T20s than the test playing nations.

If ICC rankings need to come out, ICC must take care of scheduling, which ensures that all teams play the same amount of T20i's in particular period of time, which ensures a healthy competition for the ICC rankings.

----------

Bangladesh are aiming to be at the top of table. They're playing an extra T20 match against the Dutch.

I think what is worse is the fact that Ireland are now below Afghanistan

True that.

Also, Scotland are hammering Bangladesh today (thanks, Richie Berrington) - will they zoom up past Ireland too?

EDIT - No, they won't, but the Deshis will slip waaaay back down to 9th, and Zimbabwe down to 14th.

So, Scotland should break into the rankigns right ? Dont tell me this game was not counted for T20 rankings. In case it was not, then its pretty insulting for the Scots to have missed out. :mad

* Due to outlying value, Scotland's Category 2 matches from the previous year were also included.

There are obvious flaws, such as Zimbabwe being in equal last, but what can you do when they haven't won a T20 game in the last two years? If all the top teams played a couple of games against Associates, you'd get a more accurate picture of where everyone is, but it's a start.
