Gilchrist with anyone will make a wonderful opening pair. I liked Hayden but he is not as flamboyant as his partner and tends to struggle early on.
Sachin-Sehwag is very entertaining, when both are in full flow.

Overall, the best opening batsman now is Gilchrist. Sachin and Sehwag are close second.

Mark Waugh would still be considered as the 'modern era'.

I think that he and Gilly had the best opening partnership, probably not the same record as Gilly and Haydos but thats because they didn't play together for as long.

Can't see why Jaya and Attapatu : or now Tharanga, didn't get any votes! Jaya alone does like 90% of that partnership anyways, no matter who his partner is!

Also Gibbs n Smith, only 1 :noway

They are not the best! Jayasuriya has lost his form so much these days that he does not look menacing anymore! Atapattu also has a lot of flaws in his ODI game and gets out pretty early. These two did badly in the series against India recently!

From Sri Lanka, Sanath Jayasuriya and Romesh Kaluwittharana are the most dangerous opening pair in world cricket! They re-defined ODI cricket batting inside the first 15 overs by galloping to smashing starts in the 1996 World Cup! They were so fearful that every time they came out to open, the Indian fans and the players would be fervently praying that they dont storm it on that particular day! They were devastating!

Looking at Butt's current form, and Afridi, they may take over the modern era in opening partnerships. In opening batsmen, however, Butt is really coming along fast! He looks to me a different batsman in this Pak-Eng series, and is getting very good strike rates in ODIs, with a profolic average of 55.00 in this ODI series, with Akmal at 53.50.

I always belive akmal has potential to become a very proficiant opener. Afridi should play in the lower order or add gusto to the middle.

The overyuse of the word Proficient, you all are getting Battrick fever :p

Butt and Afridi is lethal as it is, as is Butt and Akmal. Wonder what happens if Afridi and Akmal open!

this is an untested one but i think prior and colingwood would be good openers. Please dont slate this decision

No doubt Sehwag and Tendulkar. These guys can get the run rate upto 14 runs an over in full form.
