Bittorrent/Utorrent Problem

Hi, I uninstalled Bittorrent a few months when it was working fine. However when I install either Bitorrent or Utorrent now, the download of a legal just doesn't happen. The arrow goes green for about second and then goes red permanently. The changes on my computer since last time are that now I have Norton Internet Security.

Just for double measures I tried downloading a illegal torrent and still the download didn't happen. ;)

Has this got something to do with my Firewall or something?

Please help as I need my legal torrents.

PS. I tried downloading a torrent with Limewire and it worked, I dunno why. I prefer Bittorrent/Utorrent though.

Image attached showing my problem.

Firstly, I'm not a fan of Bittorrent Client, and would prefer to use utorrent. :p

Secondly, I think it is a problem with your firewall not allowing connections from the torrent client.
Try disabling the firewall temporarily to diagnose the problem.

Unlikely, but possible, your torrent may not have any seeds or leechers. Try downloading the openoffice suite from torrents. It is legal, and has dedicated seeding at all times.

You might need to open the ports of your router, since that may block the connection at times. Generally, it results in a slower connection rather than no connection at all, so that doesn't seem to be the problem.
You might want to check out the guides anyway, PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall

Thanks Abhas, I'll look into what you said some time today. I'll post to see how it went.

Didn't do anything. Just installed and tried.

BTW Abhas thanks for the help but still not working I'm afraid :(

Yeah, my Firewall has Bittorrent on Exceptions.

One question, how do you find out what your router is?

No, not the Windows Firewall, you need to check the Norton's Firewall settings.
Disable Norton, and try downloading.

Regarding the router, you need to see the router you have, and check its model number.

Thanks Abhas. It was Norton, I uninstalled it and then tried and Bittorrent worked. I'm getting AVG Antivirus and Internet Security now - They say it's better than Norton.

I use Vuze (formerly Azureus) and its wonderful.

Make sure your firewall doesnt block your torrent program. This is not usually required, but the port that you use in your torrent program must be added to your firewall so that it does not block incoming and outgoing connections on that port.

Also if you are using a wired or wireless router, MAKE SURE THAT YOUR ROUTER IS NOT BLOCKING THE PORT. If you go to your router settings, there should be an option called "Port forwarding/triggering" or something like that. It will let you add a range of ports that you want to keep open for incoming/outgoing connections. Select a range in which the port used in your torrent program exists (e.g. 41534 is the port and 41533-41535 is the range). Select "TCP/UDP" and then save your router settings.

Doing all this will tremendously boost the speeds at which your torrents are downloaded. Even if your torrent is working now, if you do these steps, your speeds would show amazing increase (from 20-30kb/sec to 400-500kb/sec if you're on a 5mbps broadband)

Hope all this helps

^This is what I'm trying to say. Port forwarding is real important, unless you do it, no matter which router you are using, your torrent is bound to get slow. The same problem happened with me, and I fixed it in the way Sai has mentioned.

Orange light means you just need to open a listening port. Red light, on the other hand, means no traffic at all is getting out. Green light of course means everything is fine.
