McGrath to quit after World Cup

Australian seam bowler Glenn McGrath has announced he will retire from international cricket after next year's World Cup.

The 36-year-old's decision comes two days after team-mate Shane Warne said he would quit international cricket after the current Ashes series.

McGrath announced his plans for the future at a hastily-arranged press conference at the MCG this morning.

Atlist he will be available for the World Cup 2007. four years will be a lot of time for aussies to find a replacement for him ( its hard to match him) but thats the reality. SHOW MUST GO ON

Oh Yuck!

He could have retired before the World Cup. I hope its an India vs Australia final in the World Cup and that Sachin Tendulkar spoils McGrath's party by smashing him for 50 runs in 5 overs!!!!

Anyways, great bowler, amazing discpline.. Australia would find it hard to get a replacement! Bowlers around the world have now started talking abt bowling the "McGrath line and length". He has made it his own!

You sure you want another India Australia final in a world cup :p He could have left after the ashes to finish on a high but he knows we need him for the WC this year and he reckons he can do it so it will be interseting to see how he goes.

Benjamin Hilfenhaus, next test series, time for you to step up to the plate (please not Johnson, don't let it be Johnson)

Sad sad sad new. Very good man and legendary bowler. Had a good run, it is sad to see him go.

maybe give Hilfenhaus a couple of years, but Bracken can fill in for the moment

While we're all be biased, I hope Shane Harwood is in the next test squad :p

Seriously though, I'm can't wait until the day that we have Tait and Brett Lee opening the bowling for us, I think that they would be the most exciting opening pair of bowlers for us. Some games they might get hit a little bit, but that would make the matches a lot closer than what has been happening recently. Then I think Stuart Clark would be first change, and then we'll have MacGill working his magic and Watson as a handy fifth option. That still looks like a great attack to me, obviously not as strong as the one we currently have, but an attack that is capable of getting quick wickets in succession which is crucial in Test cricket.

I think Hilf is an excellent prospect for the future, and I hope he plays in the one day series coming up, but he does have a few players to climb above before he would be considered for the Test side.

Confirmed what we all suspected, I hope Johnson gets a chance to prove how good he is (even though I've never really rated him but he's a good queenslander :P)

Offtopic: I really think the cricket news and cricket chat sections should be combined.

Why? Johnson has a bowling strike rate of 30 in ODIs! I rate him as the best new bowler on the scene right now.

He ain't that good. He used to bowl upwards of 150km/h before he had his back injury and now he's just ordinary. He just gets the customary left armers inswing (to right hander) that most left armers have.

Hopefully (as a cricket fan, not india fan) Troy Cooley can sort out his biomechanics allowing him to have a safe action and still bowl fast.

I would have liked to see him playing cricket for some time longer, but it's his decision whether he wants to retire or not. And he is also planning to leave at a high note by winning the World Cup.

Tait and Harwood break down to much, Harwood broke down in his last match i think and Tait was injured again. Stuart Clark and brett lee are the most likely opening pair, it will be a devastating opening partnership with a paceman an another accurate bowler. Stuart Clark opening the bowling wouldn't change much from the past cuz it will be the same as Lee and Mcgrath nearly
