Lee heroics as Kiwis crash to defeat

Australia have beaten New Zealand by 93 runs in Auckland to take the lead in the battle for the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy.

Earlier on the Aussies were all out for just 215, bespectacled spinner Daniel Vettori racking up 4-42.

New South Wales paceman Brett Lee roared in at the Kiwis from the start and left with the man of the match award after taking figures of 7-35.

"We tried to finish this off way too quickly and we kept losing wickets," New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming told reporters.

Only 10.5 overs had been bowled in the innings when Shane Bond was caught in the ring for 16 to end the match.

New Zealand six hitter Scott Styris became a hero in Christchurch by belting 101 from just 102 balls to help the Kiwis to 304-6 from their 50 overs.

Days after the home side had been skittled for just 122 chasing 215 against the Aussies, they showed what they were worth under the lights today.

A spinners wicket, Andrew Symonds took two wickets, including that of Styris.

There was three wickets for Old in Gold Glenn McGrath.

Scores:

Lou VINCENT 86
Stephen FLEMING 9
Ross TAYLOR 0
Scott STYRIS 101
Jacob ORAM 41
Brendon McCULLUM 55*
Daniel VETTORI 6
Shane BOND 0*

1/77 off 5. Not very McGrath like. Keep up the good work.

Brad Haddin scored his second consecutive half century against New Zealand

Jacob Oram took bowling figures of 2-81 from his ten overs to be the highest wicket taker in the innings, but Daryl Tuffey was ecomonical by conceding just 29 runs from his ten overs.

Scott Styris earlier scored a century in the match and maybe took the toal out of Australia's reach as he was awarded the Man Of The Match honour.

Journalist: Congratulations Scott. Can New Zealand win the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy now?

*crowd cheers*

Scott Styris: Yes. The team showed that we can compete with the best today.

The series is now tied 1-1 and will be decided the thid and final one-day international at Auckland.
