1st National Bank ODI at Westpac stadium, North Wellington
New Zealand (user) v Australia (D/N)
New Zealand won the toss and chose to bat first.
After a thrashing in the first twenty/20 match it was almost certain that R.Pontings side would come into the first ODI in fantastic form. On the other hand New Zealand started this match looking to find some form and hopefully gain a 1-o vicotry in the series. However the stats show that New Zealand still have alot of work to do after a dismal batting performance. Stats:
New Zealand started their inngins cautously scoring at a low 2 an over. Towards the end of the first 10 overs the Kiwis were at 18-0 untill the first wicket fell when N.Astle got caught by a beutiful leg-stump yorker.
- Astle looks on as Australia celebrate their first breakthrough after clean bowling the New Zealand opener.
Already on the backfoot it seemed that a captains innings was vital however S.Fleming failed to perform and soon New Zealand were 2 down but yet the Australians were finished yet because soon Styris fell to another yorker but this time LBW.
- S.Styris gets caught LBW New Zealand now 3 wickets down.
With little resistance so far C.Cairns headed to the crease to be joined soon by C.Mcmillan. The two batsmen treid their best to build a partnership and McMillan soon provided the majority Kiwi crowd with some fantastic entertainment smashing 20+ of a B.Hogg over.
-McMillan smashes a six to try and get the succesful Hogg out of the attack.
Innings Highlights continued:
The runrate now had increase to 4 an over and things were looking slightly better for the New Zealand team. C.Mcillan and C.Cairns had also put on a good partnership which made it possible. After a couple of huge overs mostyl agianst Hogg McMillan was heading towards a half century untill B.Hogg got his man trapping him LBW when he tried to slog-sweep the Slow Left Arm Chinaman.
- Finally McMillans luck runs out after getting cuahgt LBW by Hogg.
With a his partner gone one would think that C.Cairns would bat to protect his wicket, well those people would be worng. C.Cairns continued to try and push the runrate hitting some fantatsic shots.
-C.Cairns hits a six in his brilliant innings.
-Cairns continues to take on bowlers and this time its not a spinner.
Wickets continue to fall whilst Cairns continues to his well earnt 50.
The last 10 overs were approching and New Zealand were looking pass the 150 mark However some great fielding from a buzzing Australian team ensure another fallen wicket.
-The third umpires is called into play and provides the correct decision, OUT.
With the lights coming on will New Zealand be able to defend such a low socre on a brilliant pitch.
National Bank 1st ODI Australia lead the 5 ODI series 1-0 Australia innings
Australia managed to pull of what was a easy chase i the 1st ODI in front of a disappointed New Zealand crowd and team. A partnership between Gilchrist and hayden for the 1st wicket ensured victory.
Hayden smashes his first boundary of his innings.
A.Gilchrsit joins in with a boundary of the back foot.
Then a quick fire 30 frm Ponting made sure there were no problems,
however, 30 runs short of the target Australia did suffer a scare.
Gilchrist falls to a super catch of a top edged pull shot.
D.Verttori in his first ball of his first over picked up the vital wicket of the half century maker M.Hayden. Then he came back with his second delivery to get the catch of Martyn to then have it dropped at mid on....
New Zealand seemed to have anew lease of life with Vettori being a constant threat However Australia were guided home by their captain, Ponting and A.Symonds.
Vettoir has a close LBW shout which is judge not out by Alem Dar
R.Ponting helps the cause with a beautiful shot through the covers.
Man of the match: B.Hogg, after a terrific performance in the first innings B.Hogg achieved a man of the match award. R.Ponting praised his efforst and said "it would probably have been a different game if he didn't get those wickets."
SO, can New Zealand recover and find themselves a victory, find out soon.
