Shortly after regaining the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy against Australia, New Zealand have arrived in South Africa for the Third World Twenty20 Cup, which also includes Canada and Netherlands.

The Third World Twenty20 Cup is a tournament consisting of Twenty20 matches between each participating country. Each team will play each other twice, an after these matches have been played the top two teams on the league table will play against each other again in a best-of-three finals series. South Africa have been chosen as the hosts for the first ever tournament, although they will not be participating themselves.

The squads show that each team is at full strength and is taking the tournament seriously.

A journalist interviewed New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming at the team hotel.

Journalist: With the World Cup so close, is your team really going to take this tournament seriously?

Stephen Fleming: Yes. I was asked the same question before the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy and I answered the same. The World Cup could be next week or next year, New Zealand will take any cricket match they play in seriously.

Journalist: How do you feel about the form of your team?

Stephen Fleming: I am very happy with it. The team weren't looking good after the first match of the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy, they chucked it away when they were in a good position. However, they recouperated and went on to win the series so things can't be bad.

The schedule shows that the matches will alternate venues between Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Since when have the Netherlands and Canada become third world countries?

Strange, but good start.

Canada and Netherlands are third world countries in terms of cricket teams. I wanted to create a tournament where these countries could play against a test match nation.

then why is it called third world world cup, when appears to suggest all of the countries are exactly that, third world...

...But the name of the tournament shouldn't distract from a very good start to the story, well done mate :cheers, and I am looking forward to reading it.

If New Zealand are a Third World cricket country, what are Australia? :p

Looking forward to the story.

Did you not read my explanation? Canada and Netherlands are third world cricketing countries, and they have a chance to play a test nation in this tournament.
