Champions League Thread (the dawn of time - 2014)

He played well when Riquelme was in the side.

Maradona's clueless though and hasn't used him properly.

Yes but the way he fits into Barca's style, gets the best out of him. It does not happen with Argentina. I don't like it when he plays with Aguero to be honest, as they both are dribblers whereas someone like Higuain is better in the box, finisher. I know Pipita has been starting for Argentina but something tells me Maradona will switch back to Messi-Aguero for the WC.

Maradona waited until the final two qualifiers before calling up Higuain, didn't he? :laugh

What a fool.

I hope Maradona's ineptness leads to an early exit for Argentina; I can't bloody stand that lot (1986 didn't help much, of course).

Bayern have admitted to 'fearing' Rooney. It's never a good move to admit that - respect yes, but not fear.

Reversal of 1999, Ivan Olic and Franck Ribery score to cancel out Wayne Rooney's opener. But huge away goal. But very very bad news Wayne Rooney is injury and a major doubt for the Chelsea game. :( :( :( :(

Except we didn't completely dominate the first 90, like Bayern did in the final. :p

Well I must say Fergie got his subs wrong, I would have gone for defending the 1-0 lead instead of scoring the second. Dunno abt Rooney's injury but I feel he will surely miss the Chelsea game. Well we just need to win 1-0 at Old Trafford and we did that this season in the Carling Cup against City we won 3-1 and no doubt I see we cant win again.

Hopefully it could be what we did to Roma. :p

Oh please, what injury, about a month ago it was the same talk of injury and in less than a week he was back to scoring goals, this "injury" was over dramatized, as always when it comes to Wayne Rooney!!!

Firstly - Just been to 606 on the BBC website to see hundreds of threads about "Munich" and Manchester United. It's sick. Mostly Citeh and Liverpool fans it has to be said but some things transcend football and its a disgrace. I know some United fans have made comments about Hillsborough etc and that's as bigger disgrace. I'm quite surprised that people that think its funny to take the piss out of tragedies like these can use a computer. I'd ban anyone for life for any comment like that, but hey, its the BBC. There useless.

To the football - or lack of from my point of view. It was crap. Absolute crap. Even with 5 in midfield we were over run. We had no space, yet they had loads.

I'm often asked, "Sam, what's the difference between Scholes and Carrick?" and I often start my reply by kicking them in the crotch. The difference is thus. Ability and mentality. Carrick lacks both in comparison to Scholes. Scholes never panics on the ball. Yes, he loses it occasionally. But, under pressure, more often than not, he will find a pass. Carrick however, panics. He hoofs it. This mentality and lack of ability to keep calm means that Carrick will never be anything more than an Ok - good player. There is one similarity. They both can't bloody tackle and so are a bad choice to hold in midfield!!! It leaves us open and as Bayern found, easy to cut through.

Park should have been on Ribery's side, helping Gary "oh, my God if he had less pace he'd go backwards/I'll handball this instead of head it" Neville. Rooney had no support and yet missed two chances he should have scored. If you believe in luck, than his has changed. Missed two easy (by his standard) chances, deflected the ball past Van Der Sar for there goal, and looks like he's done a serious ankle injury.

Evra got caught out of position constantly and let his runner go all the time. His forward play has got much better this season. He seems to have neglected his major job recently though - DEFENDING. Tonight was the worst I've seen him play.

I think the subs were right. We needed someone to keep hold of the ball - Berbatov and we needed to replace Nani - Valencia. Problem is, we hoofed it clear each time. So they couldn't get into the game.

Finishing on a happy note, Rooney being injured will mean bye bye title and bye bye Champions League chances but will at least mean we don't have to suffer through a World Cup, thinking we can win it. Without Rooney, we have no chance. So, it will be a stress free world cup :)

Rooney could be out for as long as 6 weeks and why does it always happens with England? First Becks in 2002 then Owen and Rooney in 2006 and now Owen, Becks and Rooney. Well this is the right time for Berba to rise in Rooney's absence. Now we dont have Owen and Rooney, we will need to rely on Diouf/Macheda along with Berba.

I feel our midfield has been really poor in some matches this season. Even against Sunderland at Old Trafford Scholes and Carrick were giving the ball away cheaply and yesterday also they did the same. I thing we were lucky as we had Van Der Sar.

Its time that Hargreaves makes the bench for the Chelsea game as he could be a key as the season progresses but he isnt registered for Champions League. Hopefully Rooney's injury isnt that serious.

I only care about England this season. So if Wazza is injured now, he is getting a good break. Once he is fit for the WC, thats all that matters.

That is why you should not miss watching Arsenal at Emirates. What a turn around! I can not believe, Arsenal actually scored those two goals. Anyway it was harsh on Barca. They deserved to win yesterday and they were the better team by far margin. Only encouraging thing for Arsenal was their defense. Almunia was not the real human there, for sure. They cloned him and made a Machine which just looked like him. :p
Anyway no future for Arsenal in Champions league. Fabrigas and Gallas might not play any more this season. Arshavin might not be fit with in one week. Still it is about my 200 bugs so I hope they at least make it to Semis.

Barcelona absolutely ***** Arsenal.

Masterclass in football that first half an a hour.

We can definitely turn that around in the 2nd leg - Rooney or no Rooney.

He's done his ankle ligaments - he'll be out for a few weeks, but it's not a fracture or anything like that, thankfully. Shame though - his chance of overhauling Ronaldo's 40 + (and it was a very real chance) is gone now.

A stress free World Cup? No such thing mate!!

His injury isn't too serious - he should be back in a few weeks.

Barca were by far the best team in the first half, but when Walcott came on, Arsenal got back into it and they have a chance now, what with Pique and Puyol out.

Yeah, but Fabregas, Arshavin and Gallas are out and you can possibly add Clichy and Denilson to that list.

Plus Barca can call on Marquez, Milito and even Toure can fill in if needed.
