Champions League Thread (the dawn of time - 2014)

Bale so wasted being Welch. Should have been English.

Yep, just like Giggsy. Wales will never win a damn thing - another wasted talent at International level. Just think the difference Bale would make to England - and the difference Giggs would've made as well. We certainly would've won Euro 96 at the very least with Giggs in the team, that's for sure.

Could have even won WC 2002 & EURO 04 with Giggs in the team.

Plus currently just imagine Giggs & Johnson on the flanks, team worldwide even Spain would be super worried facing us.

Really annoyed with the British commentators who were covering the game tonight. Quite clearly they watch just 4 games in La Liga all season and base their judgement on that.

Ramos' and Alonso's intentional sending offs were a smart thing to do. Just like Suarez' hand ball in the World Cup.

I remember how much Alonso was missed in the Lyon game last season.

Extremely delighted with some of the youngsters that played against Zilina. McEachran, van Aanholt and Sturridge in particular was impressive and fantastic.

McEachran was excellent in midfield. He showed his great passing range, a couple of killer passes and I was pretty surprised of his tackling ability too despite him looking lightweight. Not great but it was good. He was calm and composed as well. Certainly a bright prospect for us in the future and England.

van Aanholt seems like he can fill Cole's position in the future. Showed good pace, great crossing ability and certainly great shots in him as well. His 20 yard effort that cannoned off the post was brilliant.

Sturridge on the other hand was pretty lively. Had a couple of great shots, was dangerous involved a lot in the attacking especially in the second half. Hoping to see more of this from him in future matches.

All in all, it was a good night despite Zilina taking a shock lead in the first half. Would probably be happy with a draw but considering our recent form, a win was needed. We got it and should have scored more than just the two goals given our second half domination. Had over 60 shots in two games but only two goals scored. Need to find our killer instincts again. Nonetheless with the win and top spot secured, the last match against Marseille is a dead rubber match. Hope to see the youngsters playing in that game again.

Alonso's sending off was pretty hilarious. :lol

So there we go. Anti football (at their own ground) meets Real Football and lose the game in the last few minutes - serves them right. They're at their own ground and didn't even try to win the game - they played for a draw all night. Rooney's perfect penalty packs them off to the Europa League, which is probably just about their mark. That shows the player Rooney is - he's under all that pressure and has been heckled all night, as well as fluffing a good few chances - to stick the penalty away so emphatically was great.

As to the penalty, it was as blatant as they come - the guy volleyed Fabio in the chest - (a few inches higher and you're looking at a Headless Brazilian!!)

Should have had another penalty as well. Still slightly worried by Berbatov's lack of fluidity and the ease at which he becomes annoyed at other team mates rather than looking at himself.

Hmmm maybe, but his off the ball movement was truly excellent last night. With Rooney and Scholes back in the side, that movement will be properly utilised with great passing and attacking.

And did you see him tracking back last night? All the way back to our goal line - and then a few moments later, he was back up the other end causing problems for Rangers. He never did that at Spurs, or last season with us. :yes

One thing about Rooney - wasn't he played wide last night? Every time I saw him on the ball, he was out wide - that's not his best position, Fergie!

Because of these intentional second yellow cards UEFA is investigating the case. They might get suspended for a couple of matches because of bad behaviour.

Check out this moment of madness by the CFR Cluj manager in the game against Basel.

CFR Cluj Coach Sorin Cartu Goes Crazy

Pretty hilarious though. lol

I just read the coach was fired, because he broke a window in the dugout. There are other ways to show your frustations. Like coaching the players.

The AS Roma vs Bayern Munich match was pretty great to watch. After halftime it was 2-0 for Bayern Munich, but in the second half AS Roma were dominating. It was like a complete different team. Also Totti played only the last 10-20 minutes.

It was interesting as Rooney was playing Berbatov's role of last season, and vice versa. Berbatov has been the spearhead this season who drops deep, and Rooney last night was in the free role of drifting where ever he saw fit.

I changed it at half time because Roma were playing awful. There was no cohesion or chemistry. From what I heard, the changes by Ranieri at half time (in terms of formation) turned the game around. As for Totti; he still grabbed the headlines!

Maybe Walter Smith knew he was taking a risk in this match. They were just playing on the break. Having said that, they did try to attack more as the game went on.

Yeah, just read the news too. I also saw a video where he bangs his head onto the dugout's perspex. Maybe he needs to go and see a counselor.

After looking at the group tables, all the teams that are most likely to finish second looks pretty tough with probably the exception of one or two teams.

If UEFA put any suspension for those "intentional" yellow cards, I think the club should contest it at a higher court. There is no rule that prevents teams from doing it, and neither is there any evidence that we actually did on purpose.

As far as I am concerned its as much against the spirit of the game as playing a weaker/second string team for a lesser game or resting players who are one booking away from a suspension to ensure they play in the next big game.

As far as I am concerned Jose Mourinho is the smartest man on this planet and UEFA are just stupid.
