Champions League Thread (the dawn of time - 2014)

Hmm that is probably the most clinical defeat Barca has suffered since Inter beat them 3-1 in 2009/10 champions league semi-final, coincidentally also @ the san siro. Worst noticeably poor game Messi has had in years also, can't remember when last i saw his touch so awry.

Most of world football has accepted you can't beat Barca playing football (except the couple times Real did last year). Its always the park the bus + clinical counter attack that tends to upset them.

Sometimes it works (inter 2009/10, madrid at times under mourinho, man utd & chelsea in past c-league battles, couple defeats in la liga over the years). But usually it doesn't work.

However celtic & Milan have done it to them twice now this season, which probably will concern them. They will do well to reach the quarter-finals after this.

Identical to what Inter did to Barcelona at the San Siro in 2010, nicely done Allegri and co.

Montolivo my man what a game yesterday! Signing of the summer in Serie A by far - on a FREE from Fiorentina.

Ye he has been special, especially in a deeper mid-field role. He is all set to be Pirlo's long term successor.

that vid shows why I really get annoyed with barca, they know their high pressing game is vulnerable to a quick counter attack if they lose the ball so even though it's happening in the oppositions half a lot of the time they're not shy about sticking the boot in causing a foul in an attempt to win the ball back.

really think refs should be punishing them more harshly as it's clearly deliberate a lot of the times and it's a cynical attempt to get people back to better defend and stop an opponent exploiting space. if a team used that tactic in the final third they'd end up with 2 or 3 red cards even though the objective is exactly the same.

Ha not a United fan, but its clear the ref messed them up, since they were controlling that game.

Madrid have a great chance to win the UCL now, because Barca are going to have to do a miracle in their current form to get past Milan.

If they do win, surely the Madrid executives would have rethink sacking Mourinho. They could maybe possibly build the best Madrid team since the Galacticos era if this squad & coach stays together for another few years.

Not possible because if Real Madrid were to win the Champions League, Jose Mourinho would leave on his own.

I don't think there is any doubt he's going. I don't really think he wants to stay there anyway.

Bad decision, but as is often the case in things like this, Nani gave him a decision to make, and when that happens you run a massive risk. Still, I thought Real had a perfectly good goal ruled out early on, and shortly after the red card Rafael should have gone for raising his arms when blocking on the line. You raise your hand and it hits it, it's a handball.

Weirdest post match interview ever from Mourinho?

Something mildly amusing about seeing Man U incredulous about a ref decision at Old Trafford though....

Decent game marred by a number of horrific decisions from the ref - the sending off of Nani, the failure to spot Rafael's handball clearance off the line (which would have seen him sent off on another night), and United's goal where RvP was clearly offside. United well on top before the red card, but oh well...
