Champions League Thread (the dawn of time - 2014)

Here comes the standard British press moaning about the Juve defenders "holding" whilst ignoring the constant shoving and pushing of the Celtic players.

.

Doesn't matter who's doing it - if refs start giving penalties when defenders keep pulling around attackers, it'll soon stop. ;)

Well, that lived up to the hype! :)

Great game, great result. Jones was immense, I thought Kagawa did quite well, Welbeck was fantastic and De Gea had probably his best game for Utd. His handling was almost perfect and that flying kick off the line - what an amazing bit of improvisation that was; tonight he really showed what a shot stopper he is.

How many times is RvP going to miscue a volley like that - he chose a good night to have an off night eh? And why didn't Giggs just stick his foot through the ball and crash it into the top right hand corner? I really hate it when refs blow the final whistle when a corner's been won - the corner's been awarded so it should be taken! Would he do the same with a penalty? Same principle applies.

Real should've gone down to ten men early in the second half - definite foul on Evra and a straight red there - the ref bottled it for me.

Still - job half done. We'd take a boring 0-0 now. :D

Gotta mention Ronaldo's header - was he wearing a jetpack?? I don't think I've seen a more towering header than that in my life.

Edit: Despite what Jose says, we have the advantage. I can remember so many times where we failed to grab an away goal and it resulted in us going out at Old Trafford. Sure, you might score Jose but we could as well...

It's going to be one hell of a night - and Real aren't travelling very well at the moment either. ;)

RVP... yet again going missing in a big game :p He's like the flat track bully of strikers. Awesome tekkers, bangs them in against everyone, but the moment it's the biggest stages he can't hit a barn door.

Aye, reminds me of that sitter he completely screwed up last season against Milan, although Lopez deserves some credit for the chance he tipped onto the bar and the last kick of the game.

Fantastic display by De Gea, shut up the critics in the English media.

RVP had a great chance (especially second one was more than a chance) but he missed it twice. Giggs was given a gift, but according to commentators he was keen in looking for the ball in mid air :p

Anyways, Away goal is always nice but Read Madrid will probably go all out at Old Trafford. De Gea was brilliant today.

With the away goal and the home fixture coming up, Man Utd are definite favourites. Keeping it tight at the back is paramount.

Man City, Chelsea (2), Liverpool (2), Tottenham, Everton, Arsenal - wait...... that's all of the big 7 sides he's scored against, this season. :spy

Premiership is one thing... International tournaments like the World Cup and the knockout stages of the Champions League is another ;)

Don't get me wrong either, I think he's awesome. Technically one of the most gifted players in the world, but people always trot out the same rubbish about Ronaldo being a big stage bottler and Messi not doing it for Argentina etc... Well RVP does have a habit of flopping in the two biggest competitions in football.

Alberto Undiano Mallenco (the one who was officiating the match) is a very good referee, somebody who nearly referees all the big derbies in Spain, due to his ability to calm things down. Was funny to see him getting the stick from Lennon really.

Hope he gets a ban for his comments, he should get probably.

I think it was a case of football culture clash, that both sides made a meal of.

In England & Scotland you regularly see players trying to obscure the goal-keeper in the six yard area vs corner kicks (that is what Hooper was doing to Buffon) which is always irritating & premiership refs let the them get away with it.

In Italy, Span & in C-League football, that doesn't happen. So Liechsteiner (spell check) seeing that felt he had to protect Buffon.

Also on the United. Very happy for Welbeck. Think he gets a lot of unfair stick at times. But his versatility & sacrifice to the team to do a job in a unaccustomed left-wing role is very under-appreciated. SAF values this & this goal is just reward.

Phil Jones had a breakthrough european night similar to Wilshire vs Barca two years ago @ the nou camp. England potentially have found its new Hargreaves & Paul Ince here. Hodgson should abandon the idea of him going to the Under 21 tournament this year & find a way to integrate him into the senior squad.

Last but not let - # 5 - Rio Ferdinand. Classic defensive display. He may never play for England again, but once he keeps up performances like this, sir Hodgson is not going to get any rest from the media. Jamie Redknapp; Pick Rio Ferdinand for England | Mail Online

Think United surely must go through now. I always thought they would leave Madrid with a positive result. Fact is only Munich & Barca have been playing as good football in Europe this season as United (Juve also in the mix).

Madrid have slipped up this season too often, so i expect the better form of United to aid them in the second leg.

Last night proved one thing to me, Rooney is just not up to it anymore,

I mean what top class striker do you know who is now being pushed into midfield at the age of 26/27.

Should be prime of his career, not showing he is no longer good enough up top so we drop him back.

His is a striker not a midfielder, yeah he can spray a ball around nicely, big deal,

His best years are gone already

^^^

Uh no. Rooney simply just did a job for the team, by showing his versatility as a striker to play a mid-field, which is an admirable straight. So ease the overzealous Rooney criticism about he is passed it & his best years are passed him. That is a ludicrous statement.

Agree with War. He sacrificed a lot for the team and played with great discipline and work rate. He showed a lot of maturity, especially when you consider how much his lack of defensive discipline cost Utd in games like the CL final vs Barca when he failed to track his man.
