Hi, I am a primary school teacher (year 4) I never allow children to visit the toilet during lesson time. Would this rule bother you if it was your child?

does it bother you that teachers have very limited powers nowadays when it comes to disciplining unruly behaviour - how do you handle it?

The children respect me. I'm very strict they know that if they step out of line there are sanctions. I usually take away their playtime or make them miss golden time. Punishments don't work unless it has an effect on something they want to do or like.[DOUBLEPOST=1515062338][/DOUBLEPOST]

Would you be annoyed by my rule?

I do remind them to go at breaktime, and they are allowed to go in lesson if they have a medical note.

So if they don't have a medical note, you don't let them go to the bathroom.

You don't see a flaw with this?

And if they don't have to go during breaks or lunch, and instead, nature calls during a lesson?

It's a ridiculous approach.

If they don't need the toilet during break, they should be able to hang on. If they don't go at break they just have to wait.[DOUBLEPOST=1515064014][/DOUBLEPOST]One of the mums came in before Christmas because her daughter was desperate on the way home. I had made her wait all afternoon. If she was that desperate she should have gone at lunch.

I'm not sure which is more ridiculous.

  • Making kids wait to go the bathroom
  • This being a real account

Surely issue with that is, if they are trying to hang on, they wont be able to concentrate on what's being taught so making rest of lesson pointless?

What about if the child had control issues my friends kid has bowl problems but is also academically bright... ?

"and they are allowed to go in lesson if they have a medical note."
Wouldn't bowel problems come under that ?[DOUBLEPOST=1515066439][/DOUBLEPOST]It's a tough approach. A hard one at that. You would get plenty of kids who would just take advantage of it if you let them go all the time. But then again, if you got to go you got to go ? After all it's not good on your health to hold on too long.
