Australian cricketer killed by lightning bolt
Sunday, January 25 2004 14:02 Hrs (IST)

Sydney: An Australian cricketer was killed by a lightning bolt in a country league game in New South Wales state (NSW), police said.

Witnesses said 31-year-old David Evans's bat exploded after lightning struck his helmet as he stood at the crease late on Saturday afternoon at Bombaderry, about 120 kilometres (92.4 miles) south of Sydney.

"Ambulance officers were called and administered treatment at the scene, however the man was pronounced dead on arrival at Shoalhaven Hospital," a police spokesman said.

Matt Sawkins, 13, and his father Graeme, were both knocked to the ground and slightly injured by the lightning.

"There were storms all afternoon, it was the first bolt of lightning," the teenager told the Sun-Herald newspaper. "His cricket bat exploded. He was about to take strike."

Police said two women feeding their horse were also injured by lightning during the storm, which knocked out power in large areas of the rural area.

Lightning can be pretty dangerous. I have heard lot of stories about people dying or being injured due to lightning strike. If I am not wrong a lightning can have around 25000 volts.

NFL games are not usually cancelled due to bad weather (rain, fog, snow, sleet, extremely cold temperature etc). Lightning is the only natural phenomenon which can abandon a NFL game.

that's sad. I remember sometime ago couple of WI players were struck by lightening during a game too..one of them was Merv Dillion I think.

Shaliesh doesn't seem to be asking a question, so here's one of mine, courtesy of my recently bought copy of Wisden 2005.

Who is the only international cricketer to have been executed?

Damn, that's a hard question to answer.

Exacuted as in chopped head off, lethal injection, stoned to death etc?

Can I just ask one more question? Is it someone from the sub-continent? Please tell me as this is a really hard question.
