Your not going to win this argument Skater, he has obviously made up his mind and is not willing to budge, just drop it before they ban you and we wont know why.

Hey, I've got a 20-page thread in the Staff forum, and I've never been banned, can't rival that can you. ;)

Instead of bans, I want members to be publicly humiliated.

PM skater the list of members who are banned, the reason, ban period etc...

/end :D

My friend, you've got to understand some things.

1. This is not a democracy here.
2. The Moderators / Staff are not people like Hitler, banning for no reason. All for criticism really.

Though I see a small point in your post, the staff have made their point already.

Moreover, you say "You're not going to win this argument.". To win an argument you have to come up with something better than "Curiosity" and "Time saving" when it is infact putting in more time!

skater, you're contradicting yourself now. If the number of people banned are less it shouldn't be any fuss to just ask someone you might know / WLM.

For the bigger members (e.g. Tom), the word will get round. For the smaller members, no one cares. We don't need one.

I do. I see a member come in, make about 10 posts in a day and then next day they are banned. What would be the harm in just having a thread where we could find out how long he'll be gone for and why?

Somebody tell me what happened to Tom so we can be done with this thread :p

And I think I have a bigger thread than you in the staff forum skater (well I should) :p

Tom wrote racist messages on the VM page of one of the Indian members, and was banned for 3 months.

A ban list would have his entry as such:

Highlander 999, 3 months, Flaming

see admins thats not so hard, and it only took Skater less than 30 seconds to write it

:laugh

Right, mission accomplished here.

I think the next thread we need to have here is to whether or not to disclose the contents of the staff forum. Specifically mine and skater's threads to see whose is longer.

:p

But in truth you'd have to write:
Highlander 999, 3 months, Racism.

Now, that'd be up there for three months for all to see. When Tom comes back, imagine the stigma? Essentially he just made a big mistake, I don't for a moment think he's a racist, but if there is a thread that lists that and only that, then when he gets back, everyone's going to expect a bunch of racist posts. Now the other result of that is a tonne of murmuring on the forums about him, and as he's banned there's no way for him to defend himself.

Now transfer this to a fairly new member, they spam a little bit and are mod queued and then given a week's ban. Now even if it is not your intention, a ban list as such has an impact on the members, which is not our intention with bans.

There is no point giving someone a temporary ban if we do not think it could serve to reinforce that the rules were broken and that there was a big mistake made or constant minor rule breaking. If a member improves from a ban then we have all had the desired outcome, I can think of many members who were banned and have come back and made great members.

Lots of forums have different moderation approaches, ours is far from perfect, but different demographics and different forum issues mean that you can't always compare things on one forum to another.

The problem is people could misinterpret that and think Tom has a racial hatred of Indians when in fact he was pushed too far by a certain member. Obviously, he went too far but he can't be blamed for that - he's a bit slow...

Bans are the business of the mods and the member banned but no no-one else. By the way, when I say 'mods', I mean the real ones - Admins and Globies - not the regular members with blue names who can occasionally close threads and look pretty in blue. No offence.

"Flaming" hardly gives out the reason why he was banned, there are a lot of circumstances behind a banning. But I think Matt's post above me sums it up really.
