Do we need a ban list?

Do we need a ban list here?

Voted the last option because I really couldn't care less about why someone got banned. It's pretty self-explanatory. The only reason you get banned is for being a douche. Simple as that.

Guys, it is more than a little forum. It is a business (not officially yet) and whenever we make a decision we have to think of the impacts it will have on the forum, which in essence is our product.

That is the a very vague statement, care to elaborate? impact? what impact will a more open and transparent moderation process have? besides a positive one.

I guess they are scared that doing this may force some guys to not come back?

I just find the whole secrecy thing a bit unnecessary. This is a forum, not the bloody Gestapo.

At the end of the day, staff decisions are private and for a reason, it's not just being confidential on the behalf of who was banned but for us as well.

What this reason is is a mystery. The members are curious that's all. People are banned for no apparent reason, a ban list would keep us informed. There's never a banning so serious that a blanket category couldn't be sufficient. I don't see how it could possibly harm the 'business' either.

Well, I touched upon the reason there. It isn't your business, don't see why you need to know why someone is banned. Gossip?

I think it would just expose mods who are ban happy. I cannot fathom any other reason for keeping it quiet. I do not buy this whole "peoples right to privacy" act.

We want an open process, it does not have to be democratic but you cannot deny that majority of your "customers" want to know why people get banned.

Not on a forum anyway

As I mentioned earlier, in most cases the reasons for their bans are contained in deleted posts. So if we say someone was banned for spamming, and all the spam is deleted, people will be complaining that the ban wasn't justified.

The point of bans is to get people to take another look at their posting and to change their ways, having their ban listed in a thread for all to see isn't a good way of encouraging them to improve themselves.

I appreciate that in the cases of long time members being banned, that posting about it could help things, and save a lot of speculation across the forums. But a list of all banned members as such is not something I'd like to see.

You've still failed to mention WHY you want this open process. As someone said, gossip?

Because it saves members being kept in the dark.

The trouble is the staff seem to think the purpose of the ban list is naming and shaming, which is far from the truth. It is simply to keep members informed, which is something we have a right to if you ask me.

Doesn't explain it still though. "Being kept in the dark" just isn't the right explanation. Okay if you're being kept in the dark, but why would you want to know it in the first place was my question. Don't say "Knowing just for knowing it."
