If you don't have an account on there, your version is pirated, meaning it's not legitimate.
And the issue updating teams is caused by that.
Actually, I'm not sure if that would be enough to prove whether the copy is legal or pirated. I still haven't found a solution to "Get Best" for my copy of the game. The farthest that the update could go was 16/79 teams.

To be clear, you won't need the disk to play after the install and activation on Steam.
So I would like to ask, do I have to open steam application now always and then play the game, or is there a better way to put the game shortcut to desktop and play it from there?
Even if you start the game from the shortcut on desktop, Steam will auto start and ask you to login (if you didn't keep the "Remember Me" option checked). Another option is Steam's offline mode, but that is something I haven't tried out yet.
