League's most prodigious playmaker, Andrew Johns, is to represent NSW in cricket.

Johns, who occasionally plays fifth grade for Newcastle's Merewether club, will represent the Blues in at least two Twenty20 matches next summer.
The move is an unashamed publicity stunt, and Cricket NSW chief executive David Gilbert acknowledged as much.

"Twenty20 is about promoting the game and this is a promotion.

"The states see Twenty20 as an opportunity to be as left field as possible. Nobody loses sleep if they win or lose," Gilbert said.

NSW captain Simon Katich said he would want Johns to play if NSW qualified for a home final.

But by Johns's own admission, he won't be much use.

"I can't bowl real well, I can't bat and I can't field," he said.

"It's a big class rise but fingers crossed, I don't get a bat and just get a bit of a field."

Johns will play for NSW against South Australia at the SCG on December 14th and against Queensland also at the SCG December 15.

Johns said today he would play a few practice matches with Merewether in preparation for his NSW debut.

"[NSW coach] Trevor Bayliss has also invited me to attend a few practice sessions," he said. "Believe me, I?ll need all the help I can get. The prospect of batting against Shaun Tait, who bowls as fast as Brett Lee, and Jason Gillespie in the first match is already giving me nightmares."

Gilbert said he first discussed the concept with Johns's manager, John Fordham.

"In those discussions, John Fordham pointed out that the great Reg Gasnier represented a NSW XI captained by Richie Benaud in a match against Fiji at the SCG back in 1960 so in many ways a precedent had been established," said Gilbert.

"Also in the line-up were fellow Test players Norm O'Neill, Jim Burke, Keith Miller, Alan Davidson and Neil Harvey."

I dont know what you mean he is in the game. You dont get all the way to Merewether 5th without attracting some attention from the makers of video game. ;)

How is Andrew Johns going to play for NSW? IF he plays against Victoria what are you going to do?

Tasmanian Tigers Vs Victorian Bushrangers 20Twenty Match Preview

At Bellerive Oval, Hobart
Thursday 14th December 2006

Before we get into the match the announcement has been made that the Australian squad that is representing the nation in the current VB Series has been given the all clear to play in the 20Twenty Big Bash as they do not play their next match until the 28th of December. The decision to let the player participate is to promote the game and also have a bit of fun while their at it which means Ricky Ponting is in for Tasmania and Shane Warne and Cameron White are in for Victoria

History Say?s:

20Twenty Matches Between Teams: 0

History will have nothing to do with this match, as the two teams have never played before in the 20 over format. The Tigers only managed 1 point in last year?s competition and that was from a no result whilst the Bushrangers won the tournament so it is no surprise who starts favourite.

TAB Sportsbet Odds:

5 Key Match-ups:

Match-up 1

This one is one hell of match up on paper as the two players are at the top of list for respective teams. The hitting power of Jon Moss at the top of the order can either mean that Victoria get off to a flying start or are 1 down early. Cox on the other hand is not a greatly powerful hitter but a class stroke maker. It will be very interesting to see how both batsman adapt to the shorter form of the game but for now the battle goes to Jon Moss for his ability to threaten the pace attack and it?s new ball.

Tasmania: 0
Victorian: 1

Match-up 2

It?s not often that we see Ricky Ponting playing state cricket so we better make the most of it. The Australian captain will come it at 1st drop whilst Hodge will make his entry at number 4. It?s hard to go past Ponting as far as his ability to loft the ball goes especially over the mid on region where as Hodge will target the point to cover area. An obvious win here to Ponting as one of the worlds greatest batsman.

Tasmania: 1
Victoria: 1

Match-up 3

A player of the past versus a player of the future. Dave Hussey attacking is about as sure as paying tax whilst Bevan has built a name for himself on how he bats at the end of the inning. 20Twenty cricket is like an end of the innings so it will interesting to see if Bevan rises to the challenge or gets confused by it. You would have to go with Hussey to win this match-up because it?s a game of hitting which the youngest brother does very well.

Tasmania: 1
Victoria: 2

Match-up 4

Warney is back to the domestic scene but don?t expect the same magic that he produces in the ?traditional? game. Warne?s 20Twenty career has been an absolute shocker so far as his flighted leg spinners are targeted at every opportunity. Xavier Doherty unfortunately will be matched up against Warne as the Tigers spinner who has been held in high regard in his short career so far but don?t expect any magic from him in this match.

Tasmania: 1
Victoria: 3

Match-up 5

This being the only match-up of specialist bowlers gives the idea of just how much of a batsman?s game this is. Hilfenhaus has been an incredible success story in a short period of time whilst Lewis is always on show. This match-up probably won?t have an effect on the match but it goes to Hilfenhaus anyway because f the amount of wickets he has taken this season.

Tasmania: 2
Victoria: 3

The Victorians as expected will go into the match as favourites but they may not be as certain as the TAB Sportsbet odds suggest. All the Tasmanians need is a standout performance with the willow, which Ponting is more then capable of or even a Di Venuto and they can cruise to a victory. On the other hand the Victorians aren?t favourites for no reason and it is tough to go past such a champion team with so many champions in it. Strap into that favourite chair of yours and keep the channel on Fox Sports for the 20Twenty Big Bash live from Bellerive Oval.
