India Cricket News: BCCI suspends all bilateral tours to West Indies | ESPN Cricinfo

BCCI is set to initiate legal action against the WICB. Its believed that BCCI is asking for $65 million in compensation.

Now of course WI will contest this, but given the way the tour finished its hard to see a decision going in their favor. If the BCCI win, and they really should, then its hard to see WICB paying that kind of money. They are already cash strapped, which started the trouble to begin with, and to have to pay $65 million to the BCCI would be the end of WI Cricket some feel.

I think it will be more of a way to have a hold over WICB in future rather than just plain punishing move.

//While a BCCI release made no specific mention of any claim for damages, the Indian board will also initiate legal proceedings against the West Indies Cricket Board.//

Well when you initiate legal action, in a case of breach of contract, there are only two things one can seek -

1) Compensation
2) Specific Performance

There is a third option and that is a mix of the two.

1) - Self Explanatory

2) Is to get the court to direct the opposing party to do a specific task to cover the losses. Like BCCI can ask WICB to sort out their issues and tour again next year.

However given the state WICB seems to be in, there seems to be little point in going with 2). No specific action by WICB can help the BCCI.

So when they say legal action, its just clear that they are going to seek some compensation.

They could still be as competitive, probably more than, Ireland and the likes and individual islands.

Yeah but think about it. From being one of the biggest ever giants of cricket, you yourself are comparing them to associate nations and saying they will be better.

For a team to once be a team all teams aspired to be, to then reduce to being compared with Associate nations for competitiveness ! That is effectively the end of WI Cricket.

Is the link wrong in the first post ? I did not find any info on BCCI initiating legal process against WICB :s

I think BCCI and WICB will eventually resolve their issues, and the bilateral series will continue over the years. I mean, if we can make peace with PCB and engage them in bilateral series every now and then, then WICB shouldn't be any more difficult. WICB also stated in a report that "taking action on the players" and "engaging BCCI in talks" were their two top priorities right now

Lol, yeah fixed :)

Personally I think WI should be punished. 65$ million is no joke. Just think if instead of Ind, WI had been touring Pak. They hardly get any money anyway as team will tour Pak, and if WI had pulled out of an UAE series. Perhaps not 65 mil, but pak would have lost atleast 30 mil. Think of how hard that would have hit them. Or think of a NZ summer gone down the drain like this.

Just because its BCCI and they are rolling in money anyway, everything is like okay chill, sort out the issues - talk. I am of the view that WI should be punished and punished severely so that such behavior is never repeated. However perhaps stop short of sending WI cricket into oblivion.

Sadly for WI, they state they have run themselves into, even a small fine of 10-20 mil is likely to send them packing, and that is the very least you would expect them to be fined.

I bet they could compete with Zimbabwe and Bangladesh.

They would just have to rebuild. If anything I think having a chance to do so will help them in some ways in increasing the popularity of cricket over there again.

Doubt it will happen though. It just won't be paid and you'll get a new body of west indies cricket set up.

I feel somewhat compelled to post on this matter seeing that I have had an unholy alliance with both cricket playing teams, India and West Indies which puts me in good stead to offer an opinion and address the concerns of this 'cricket crisis' on this board.

Firstly the WICB must be held culpable and they must be dealt with accordingly. A new board, new structure of governance for the WI team is needed, most of their procedures and doctrine are from the colonial period when the islands were all united under British rule with all the West Indian nations gaining independence and in some case republic federations the body to drive this forward must be CARICOM. The cricketing world needs a strong WI team, a strong English team and a strong Australian team, only then will cricket be complete.

The WI players must also be punished if they were professional they would have waited after the tour was completed to protest. Why didn't they protested before? Seemingly most were preoccupied with making money in the champions league ( another waste T20 league) and apparently couldn't care less or did not attend the players AGM! WIPA represents the players, its their sole responsibility to ensure the WIPA head works in their best interest, the WICB has absolutely nothing to do with this. It is also disappointing, embarrassing and outright shameful to read in the headlines that the BCCI hierarchy got involved with the WI players dictating whether they played or not. Finally the present WI players are not and have not played any good cricket in recent decades for team WI, there have been the good games in between but mostly disgusting they have not played to their ability when representing WI, with the advent of T20 most if not all the players have chosen IPL and similar leagues over WI, absolutely no loyalty, so we ask the question do they deserve to be compensated well at all? Verdict they should all be suspended for a year, not allowed to play in the IPL, unlikely this will occur because the WICB wants that 10% cut from the IPL!

Finally the BCCI. They brought this upon their own selves since they have bedded the WICB, this is the backlash, commendable they seem to stop the 2016 tour of the caribbean hopefully they play a top team for a change like traveling to Australia or South Africa. They should be punished for influencing the WI players on tour and an investigation must occur into this matter. Since this can all be a concoction of the BCCI to show other boards how powerful they really are. Verdict, highly unlikely the BCCi will take legal action against the WICB for compensation, when this is finalised we ask ourselves who is to gain most from this entire episode? Do we really think that 65mil US will severely affect the BCCI coffers?

I will not be replying further to this post, sorry, I know its unfair to other posters but forgive me.

I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy Divali.

All the best for christmas and wishing a prosperous new year, 2015.

^^ That was for Untouchables666 where he mentions some excellent points. Then ends up saying this whole drama could be a concoction by the BCCI to show their might :spy
