How Ravi Shastri, the big noise of cricket, called it wrong | Barney Ronay | Sport | The Guardian

This Guardian article is trashing Ravi Shashtri, who by all accounts is a class act.

Ravi Shashtri and Kapil Dev were refused second helpings of food while touring England.

Ian Botham and Allan Lamb pursued a ridiculously expensive libel case against Imran Khan and lost. Imran Khan invited Botham and Lamb for dinner a couple of years ago and ended the misunderstanding.

Forgive and forget....Let's get along.

This is interesting, some players enjoy playing on the flat tracks of the subcontinent, And when it comes to difficult situations, you hide behind players like Dravid, Sehwag, Gambhir, Tendulkar and Yuvraj. what does this mean? we don't have anymore players who can handle the tough situations and put the opposition on the backfoot?

Dravid sacrificed everything for the team and yet he was dropped just after 1 bad series because Dhoni opted for a young team, but now when the team is not doing well, you again go back to Dravid, how much more will he do for the team?

Dhoni has learnt a very good lesson, Dravid showed him what he is made of in the Nottingham test against England where the pitched favoured the bowlers. In such situations, you hardly see Dhoni or Raina perform, even in South Africa in the ODIs right before the World Cup, Dhoni, Raina, Sharma, Vijay, etc were big flops. Only Kohli, Yuvraj and Yusuf were good enough to face the South African quick bowlers on those bouncy wickets in absence of Sehwag ,Gambhir and Tendulkar.

There is a huge flaw in our selection policies. I will blame the management, selectors and the captain for constant changes in the team and mysterious selections.

During Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid's time, they selected the best players out of the available options and then gave them good opportunities to perform and showcase their skills and then gave them ample of chances if they were good enough, they supported and developed players like Sehwag, Yuvraj, Gambhir, Zaheer, etc. They stuck with these players even when they had a rough phase in their career, and these players were the main performers for us in the World Cup 2011 which we won. This is how you build a team.
But this is not happening under Dhoni.

People speak a lot about MS Dhoni's captaincy for winning the world cup, but nobody can see the hardwork of Dravid and Sourav behind it. Dhoni was a big factor in 2007 t20 world cup win.
But India's rise in tests and World Cup win was because of the hardwork of Sourav,Dravid and other seniors in the team.

Dhoni is fantastic as a player and as a captain, but he should learn about team development and managing the players from Dravid and Sourav, as the way he is making constant changes in the team on the name of competition is affecting the team in a negative way if you think about long term development.
And add to it, he is even biased towards some players.

If this goes on this way, then we won't see players like Dravid,Sehwag, Sachin, Laxman, Yuvraj, Gambhir, etc. in coming years.

He has clearly not handled a lot of players very well,
Pragyan Ojha, Amit Mishra, Robin Uthappa, Dinesh Karthik, Irfan Pathan, Rahul Dravid, etc. the list will go on.

You don't keep dropping players and changing the team, you pick the best players and stick with them, give them ample of chances, and they should be dropped only if they hit rock bottom.

There has to be a complete change in approach in the way players are handled, or else, it will be really bad for India if you look at the bigger picture.

My Final 11 would be :

Sachin
Sehwag
Gambhir
Kohli
Dravid
Raina
Dhoni
Praveen
Ashwin
Khan/Ishant
Munaf
--------------------------------------------

For the 3rd test, how if we keep Mukund at no 6? India's major problem later in the innings is Second new ball. Which Mukund can I am guessing now can face with some more confidence. Just a suggestion.

Lol people are starting to talk about the ODIs, we are just halfway through the TEST series.

Reading the report on how the FC game went, it seems like India just couldn't be bothered. They've given up it seems, checked out mentally. All the cricket has taken it's toll and fatigue has set in in what was supposed to be their biggest series in the year. Sigh.

how do you know dhoni's dropping players? might be the selectors.

dravid's played 155 Tests and 339 ODIs for India, also has got 4 fat ipl checks....nobody's wronged dravid for crying out loud.

It was not wrong when the selectors and Dhoni (if he was part of it) went with the younger players in place of the likes of Dravid and Laxman in the ODI's. We needed younger legs in the shorter formats. Remember in those days, we used to talk about how the old legs hurt our fielding. Even now we are nowhere near a good fielding side (we are good at times, horrible many other times). But we have not developed batsmen who can withstand tough conditions overseas. So we are going to Dravid now. But this is his farewell series and we will be back to the youngsters again.

No he isn't. He's an utter tool. Read that article this morning on my break hit the nail on the head for me.

Yep, hes an idiot. He really should have waited till the series finished before he made those comments about everyone being jealous, because now he looks like even more of an idiot.

:thumbs

Bopara is another disappointing selection. Bopara is just an ordinary batsman, but with the Indian bowling be so poor, I wouldnt be surprised he gets runs as well.

Bopara has never quite established himself in the England side, 10 Tests to his name between 2007 and 2009.

Bopara vs WIN : 355 runs @ 118.33 (100 x3, HS 142)
Bopara vs AUS : 105 runs @ 15.00 (HS 35)
Bopara vs SRI : 42 runs @ 8.40 (HS 34)

Bopara vs Morgan

Bopara : 502 runs @ 33.47
Morgan : 513 runs @ 34.20

Bopara's bowling is in theory handy, in practice 49.2 overs to take one wicket @ 199.00. Morgan has scored about one third of his runs against Sri Lanka at home and without Malinga or Muralitharan, and about half his runs against a weak Pakistan and Bangladesh - this series he is averaging 22.25 against India.

I'm trusting England will produce some flat and lifeless wickets, might seem unfair but I doubt groundsmen in India or any other country would produce result pitches with their side up in the series. I fear that we may try and outseam them, when in this position of dormy two up you don't go playing risky drives/shots near the water/bunkers :facepalm

R.P. Singh Is the replacement of Zaheer Khan  Big Blow To India:facepalm

The way he's breaking down halfway through matches & also the way he is bowling...it is not at all a big blow....Who knows....A fit R.P.Singh might be a blessing in disguise (Touchwood :p)...dont know how his form is....:rolleyes

Anyway, Zaheer out for another 16 weeks.....which means we will see Zaheer in 2012....if he decides to stick around...(he will be 33 then)....

i would've chosen irfan pathan but considering lack of form and match practice guess RP Singh was the best option when it comes to swing bowling, doubt he'll get a game in front of Munaf and the rest though.
