England In India - October 2011/12

Why arent you convinced about Mukund? He has had two good innings in tough conditions in the ongoing WI series so far (25 and 48). He looks much better than Vijay. Obviously you get better with experience. I am so happy that the selectors took the right decision of giving Mukund the opportunity over Vijay. If Mukund can play some good innings in the third test against WI and at Lord's, he will make a strong statement.

Of what I've seen of him in the matches. I find him dubious on front-foot. Too many inside edges and plays and misses. Though we don't have any better option atm and he'll probably play only 1 test in England.

mohit_dude10 i dont accept your view. On tough condition mukand played very well. I can clearly know. Even Gambir can't able to play in tough condition. Rahul dravid catch drop atleast twice. Every good player(laxman, dravid etc.) played same as mukand. So dont blame mukand. He will definetly well on third test match

Happy with that squad, Saha is just a squad filler so I don't mind him either.
It is the set of players who I though would make the mark and they did.

Particularly happy with Yuvi's selection, as England brings out the best out of him,
and his lleft arm off spin would be really helpful.

Maybe take Yuvi instead of Raina at #6. We have a walking wicket in KP then :p

In all seriousness though, Raina has reclaimed that #6 spot for now.

I'm also glad with the make up of the Indian batting line up as with Sehwag, there is only 1 left hander in the top 7 which makes it just a little bit more difficult for Swann.

My Team for First Test against England:

Mukund (Just because Sehwag is not there)
Gambhir
Dravid
Sachin
Laxman
Yuvi
Dhoni
Singh (I would like to see how he performs, when he gets competition from Swann)
Zaheer
Sree
Ishant

Conclusion: I think India will take it 2-1. (MY OPINION)

Seems like Sehwag might also miss the 2nd test. Is it true? TOI reports about it. This means India go into the test series with a disadvantage. Hope we don't fluff it all up by the time Sehwag comes in, because he might not start banging away at England.

Absolutely. Raina is the favorite starter for a place in the XI for Lord's. It would be foolish if Yuvraj walks in and claims that spot. Raina has done enough work in the ongoing series in tough conditions to stake his claim

I wouldn't have pickeded Sehwag for the squad. All I can see it as being is a distraction for whoever comes in for him while everyone keeps asking is he going to be fit.

Personally i dont see Sehwag not being around intially much a disadvantage to IND. Since one the conditons are pace-bowler friendly, most likely England would be failing him, given his career his filled with struggles against quality pace bowling in such conditions

If it was Tendulkar, then you can say its a certain disadvantage, since he is opposite.

Indian XI to disturb England:

Sehwag
Gambhir
Dravid
Tendulkar
Laxman
Yuvraj
Dhoni
Mishra
Zaheer
Praveen
Ishant

Mishra in for Harbhajan for the reason I specified earlier - they then have two English top order batsmen's wickets for free in Trott and KP. Yuvraj ahead of Raina cos he has a special liking for England plus the left arm off spin bowling option comes into effect for taking out KP, while Raina's expected to struggle in the English conditions. Fact - Raina's highest score in England during the World t20 of 2009 was 10 against Bangladesh, though he's a far far better player now.

P.S: Just my opinion.

Just be careful with the KP will always get out to Mishra/Yuvraj talk. Australia learned the hard way by picking Xavier Doherty to specifically get KPs wicket, and because England had more right handers than left. Too bad Doherty was poor, and too bad they couldn't get the left handers out in the first place :( Pick your best bowlers and the rest will take care of itself.

Yes, good point for Swann - he loves those left handers.

If Dhoni misses out on the Lords test, big disadvantage for India as far as captaincy goes. Having such a talisman captain has always been great for India. Who will captain in Dhoni's absence? Sachin doesnt want it, Dravid has relinquished it, no others (except Laxman and Gambhir) have a permanent place in the test XI to take up captaincy. I think Gambhir should be given captaincy for the Lord's test if Dhoni is banned.

Personally, i would keep Sehwag for his bowling alone in the side. Because if there is no cloud cover, i can see him comfortably outbowling Anderson. And this is proved by their records in Asia + West Indies where there is no cloud cover most of the time.

Sehwag 32 wickets @ 38.65

Anderson 21 wickets @ 42.23

There is a reason Anderson's nick name is Clouderson.
And if there is cloud cover, his bowling will not be needed because England players can't play quality bowling as proved by their records against the best bowlers of last decade.

Didn't catch the Ashes then?

There are only 2 Australian batsmen in top 20 rankings. And both of them scored runs. Hussey and Watson. Australian batting is out of form from last 1 year.
This further proves my point.

VVS Laxman is Vice-Captain of the Indian team. In Dhonis absence, he will lead the team.

Anderson is a good bowler but as Sehwag does not like to play in overcast conditions on a green pitch, Anderson have also faced trouble to bowl on flat pitch.
