Very happy with the comments so far - but for the last time - Monty Panesar is out injured, I have not dropped him!

What happened
Both teams, annoyingly, had plenty of positives to take from the opening day of the first Test at Lord's, and no one has the upper hand.
The toss was won by England, who had no hesitation in batting first with the pitch flat and the forecast good. The traditional international season opener at the home of cricket has brought a full house, including members with egg and bacon ties. They were clearly pumped up for the event - Beethoven could be heard belting out from the pavilion before the bell went to call the players out. How hardcore.
The pumped up MCC members had been head banging to Beethoven before the start of play
The cricket suited the ground. It was proper, old fashioned stuff. Once England's openers had fallen for relatively low scores, captain Michael Vaughan and, strangely enough, Kevin Pietersen regained control with a hardy effort. Vaughan spent 175 balls at the crease for his 71, Pietersen 167 for his 60.
Vaughan and Pietersen steadied the ship with a partnership of 113
Once they were out to the impressive Iain O'Brien, Ian Bell and Owais Shah made just 29 between them , but Andrew Flintoff and Chris Read, not in the side for many months, shared a partnership of 38 before the close.
O'Brien got his name on the honours board with a fine 5/63 after 26 overs, stealing the show for the Black Caps.
Iain O'Brien had a fine day with figures of 5/63
England finished the first day on 278/6, a respectable total, but one that New Zealand will hope to match or even better.
A tasty day coming up tomorrow.
