England "pick-pocketing" players

You would probably find alot of them would have been raised in Canada once migrating from an early age.

Thank you very much and good night. How is that any different to someone who comes here for 4 years? Just because he doesn't when hes older doesn't make it any difference does it?

I'm sure most countries would do exactly the same if a prodigious talent moved to your country you'd want him to play as quickly as possible. I think with the KP thing he got a british passport through his grandmother, he didnt have to wait for 4 years to gain the citzenship it just took him a while to get going in the UK.

Nah, he needed citizenship. He didn't make his debut until 2005, yet had FC averages of 57, 62, 51 and 52 in the seasons prior to making his England debut. He also went to India and averaged over 100 in the 3 FC games he played in 2003.

I'm fairly sure he qualified for an English passport already though?

Has Eion Morgan been raised in England? Is Eion Morgan a true Englishman? Was Ed Joyce raised in England? Was Ed Joyce a true Englishman?

I never said I had an issue with England choosing players who were born in other countries but raised in England. I have an issue with England choosing Irishmen, Australians, South Africans who "qualify" for English but aren't real Englishmen. I believe that for the good of cricket as a whole and for the good of English cricket they should be choosing players who are true Englishmen whom they have developed themselves.

Yeah his mother English so he is actually very English as a matter of fact :p..I think it happens to be coincidence that he played 4 years of county cricket before he got into the side.

Were any of thse Canadian players brought up in Canada(the ones I have picked out earlier)?

In answer to your next outrageous claim! Most of these players are English quaified KP has an English mother which makes him pretty English if I may say so myself. I'm sure if they had a problem with being picked they could refuse to play but it happens to be that a lot of the players picked actually want to play for England and usually express their joy at being picked for them.

The way I understand it any players from Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland can play for England if they want to. Definately Welsh players anyway as the ECB is the England and Wales Cricket Board and players such as Simon Jones and Robert Croft have played for us. I am sure someone can throw some light on this (Kev?). There is definately no such thing as a 4 year rule as we all share the same [British] passport. They really should name the team Great Britain (or GB & Ireland) but that would I suppose stop Scotland and Ireland competing seperately.

Probably. But i'm just assuming. I believe many of them would have been raised in Canada.

I'm not saying that they're not English qualified i'm saying alot aren't "true" Englishmen. I wasn't referring to anyone specifically. The reason why these players express joy at being picked, such as Darren Pattinson, is because they know they will never actually play for there "real" country. Pattinson has even said in an article he knew he would never play for Australia so jumped at the opportunity to play for England.

It really annoys me, especially the Kevin Pietersen issue.

They're qualified for England, much like most countries have players who aren't origionally from that country but through birthrights or citizenship, they've made a claim to say, "I'm (whatever nationality)."

People never said anything about Simon Jones playing for England, he's Welsh! (Fully understand that the ECB do operate under a name with Wales included into that)

If guys like Kevin Pietersen, Darren Pattinson and to some extent Saqlain want to play for England and do it the proper way, like Saqlain and Pietersen did (gaining citizenship) then they should not be harassed and continually reminded of their roots. I'm sure for KP and Pattinson in particular its frustrating to keep answering the same question with, "I'm English."

All this talk of pick-pocketing is rich coming from a nation founded from convicts.

*leaves room*

Subject to the overriding discretion of the ECB, acting
with the consent of the International Cricket Council, a
Cricketer will only be qualified to play for England in a
Test Match or in a One Day International Match or
International Twenty20 Match if:

(a) he is either a British citizen or an Irish citizen; and

either (i) he was born within England and Wales;
or (ii) he has been resident in England and Wales for the
immediately preceding four consecutive years; and

(b) he has not during the immediately preceding four
consecutive years either

(i) played cricket for any ICC Full Member Country
except England at under 17 level or above,
or (ii) played First Class Cricket in any Full Member
Country outside England and Wales, except as an
overseas cricketer under local rules similar to Regulation
3 above or in any other circumstances approved by the
ECB; and

(c) he makes, whenever requested by the ECB, a
declaration in the form set out in Annex B to this
Regulation; and

(d) he is also qualified for England pursuant to the
provisions laid down from time to time by ICC governing
qualification for Test Matches, One Day International
Matches and International Twenty20 Matches.

From the ECB rules of qualifications, I trust that clears everything up :p
