i rate Lyon a lot higher than Ali to be honest...Lyon has more control...Ali has his moments when he can really mean something but he generally gives away too much for the wickets he takes...but he does take some biggies....but Ali will get you far more runs than Lyons ever can...

Bowling wise i would say it is pretty even...batting wise Aussies have the edge...we have some good players but the holes in our top order will play a part in all this....too much pressure on Cook and Root to score big......

Fair assessment. Ali doesn't believe in himself but Lyon does. Pace bowling more of a factor usually other than Sydney so hopefully not too big a factor.?

Bowling wise Aussies have the edge, Batting wise it's pretty close. Both middle orders can either implode or do great. I have a feeling Anderson "The Home Bully" won't do well just like the last Ashes in Australia.
England reliant on Cook and Root or otherwise on their lower order to bail them out. Australia's middle order has some question marks floating around it, but considering these Ashes are at home, they'll fare well.

Nasser today saying we should pick Samit Patel if Stokes can't travel! A baffling and defensive opinion.
If no Stokes, I'd take Plunkett. I feel we are going to need a 4th seamer in the team. Especially if bowling first, you aren't gonna get many overs out of the finger spinners.
I've never been impressed by Jake Ball and don't see how he was selected. Absolute pie chucker. If we have him in a 3 man seam attack, we will get mullered.
My 1st Test starting XI assuming no Stokes:
Cook
Stoneman
????
Root
Malan
Bairstow
Ali
Woakes
Plunkett
Broad
Anderson
For the ????? There is literally no good choice.
