England Team Discussion

I'm not getting at anything. Finn has been mistreated in his career. That's a fact that pundits have even brought up. But like I said, he should be back but he isn't as explosive as when he first stormed on the scene and has mentioned confidence issues time and time again. I really have no idea why you keep bringing up the same stuff when we all know what happened. SMH. Move on. Discuss something else.

Are you joking? I want to move on. I'm saying Finn is bowling well, there's no issue, and all his problems were with the previous management.

Dan or Don Lawrence will play 100 tests...

Assume the test squad will be picked soon. Having kept a close eye on the county season so far, I'd like to see:

1. Cook
2. Hales
3. Vince
4. Root
5. Ballance
6. Stokes
7. Bairstow
8. Ali
9. Broad
10. Finn
11. Anderson

12. Roy
13. Plunkett

Can't argue too much with that but I'd prefer Buttler as wk/bat. Vince is another iffy choice but I like the positive approach.

I really think England have a crop of around 17 or 18 players who are a bit too much for either SL or Pakistan.

Buttler shouldn't be in the test team; it'd be dumb to play a player dropped for form who hasn't played any multi-day Cricket for months. Maybe in the medium term yes, but not for the first series of the summer

I assume you'd still want Bairstow in the team, and would therefore drop Vince and bring in Buttler. To be honest, I don't think there is anyone better than Vince available to be selected, apart from Ian Bell, but I don't think the selectors want to look backwards.

I'm not sure who I'd drop but yeah, probably would be Vince.

Buttler is dynamic enough to be given a shot, the worse that could happen is we get another Morgan, which wouldn't be too bad.

Not if they don't want me faeces delivered to them in a post, they don't.

Alastair Cook is an absolutely vile piece of work.

Alastair Cook admits England have to make 'tough decisions' about under-performing top order | Daily Mail Online

This is a guy who has had at least two major patches of bad form that lasted over a significant period of time - one in the 12 months or so before the 2010/11 ashes, and again the 12/18 months after the 2013/14 Ashes.

During the first, he was giving unstinting support by his captain and coach. During the second, he was captain but was again giving complete support by the players and management team.

Here you have 2 players finding their way in test cricket in Hales and Compton, and Compton actually didn't do too bad (274 runs at 30, compared to Cook's 310 at 34). Yet far from supporting them - even if pushing them hard in private - he has done nothing but undermine them publicly from the moment the SA series ended.

The guy is an absolute, absolute [insert vile epithet here]... Cook Undermines Newbie Teammates about sums it up.

Cannot think of any England captain I've liked less, or who has been less suited to the role - and I include Chris Cowdrey.

Combined Sky Sports commentators first test Xl

1. Cook
2. Hales
3. Vince
4. Root
5. Bairstow
6. Stokes
7. Buttler
8. Ali
9. Broad
10. Finn
11. Anderson

Bairstow/Buttler just beat Ballance. I think a guy that averages 47 should be given another chance personally but would be equally happy to see Buttler back.

Rob Key wanted Rashid for Ali but was outvoted by the other 4. Ali is having a very poor season with the ball so far, so can see Key's logic.

Jake Ball got a mention to potentially replace Finn, particularly as Durham and Leeds will assist his type of bowling early season.

All 5 commentators want to stick with Hales to open. I think there's a chance this won't happen but hope it does. Think Compton's days are over. I'm very pleased with that.

The problem you've got is that Compton did solve a problem over the winter. Yes, he didn't score massively, but he stuck around. You look at Hales and Vince in that top three and with the way they play, there will be times when they fold quickly. Then what happens? Well Root comes in facing a fired up bowler with a new ball. I mean sure, it may not happen very often, but Compton did play a good role over the winter, that shouldn't be overlooked.

On Rashid, he needs to get more consistent. It's all well and good have variations, but he relieves the pressure too much, with that bad ball. The top players will sit on him and put that away and take 4 an over off him easily. Ali is probably a more boring bowler, but he can get batsmen out through building up pressure. That's what you need in England, when the pitches don't turn that much most of the time.

Be interesting to see how England go though. I can't help but think that the Browne talk is just the media, because he's doing nothing at the start of this season. I'd be happy with Hales and Compton in the side, because you have that gap at 5 to blood a younger player in. It's a lot easier to start down the order and then move up it, as Australia always used to prove.

Compton's issue is his dreadful start hes had to the county season. I don't think he even had to go hitting 100s left right and centre to keep his place secure, he just had to put in a couple of decent scores and go along alright but he hasn't really done that and it may have cost him his place.

I'm not sure that Ali is the economical bowler you think he is. He's being smashed by Div two batsmen this year, and he's had some pretty expensive spells for England in his last few tests. I'm not saying we should drop Ali, but if you're looking for somebody to do the holding role then Tredwell or Ansari are probably better options.
