don't understand why England didn't bowl out the slow bowlers. The last few overs in both innings were a disaster but over the 5 games the windies were better.Would have loved to have been there.

It's interesting. Very 2015 WC response and a nuclear option. That made sense in the grand scheme of things; we were hosting the next World Cup and our limited overs cricket (aside from a T20 WC win) had largely been crap for 20+ years.

This smacks of we lost the Ashes and winning the Ashes is all that matters. Will Broad and Anderson be playing in the next Ashes? Maybe not so let's jettison them. Same thing happened to Plunkett after the World Cup.

Of course it's interesting that a team that couldn't score runs has largely been retained. You could end up with only two changes to a line up that has been abysmal (Root aside).

The Anderson/Broad thing does remove a difficult decision if a new coach is appointed. Equally they might appoint someone who wants them both back in.

The 'Make Broad captain' crew will be having kittens. It is unfortunate for Broad, and I know he's said this himself, that he and Anderson are kind of seen as a pair, when he's 4 years younger.

Glad to see Foakes back hopefully he will get as much leeway as Buttler did (unlikely). Although, I could easily see England give YJB the gloves again. :lol

I would sum this up as being quite possibly worse than the Ashes squad.

Reasons:
  • This team will lose 3-0 to the West Indies
  • There is only one reserve batter in the squad
  • After not making the team all tour for being drunk and lazy, COverton and Lawrence make the team again
  • This team will lose 3-0 to the West Indies.
  • All the young, exciting seamers have been brought in at the expense of the players they could learn most from.
  • Meanwhile, Craig Overton still makes the squad.
  • This team will lose 3-0 to the West Indies.
  • Respond to the five Test series where the team never crossed 300 by dropping the best bowlers.
  • Also bat the one guy who does score runs out of position at three. We know Root is less good at three.
  • This team will lose 3-0 to the West Indies.
There are shreds of positives, like Parkinson being on the fringes, and a fresh new opener to sacrifice to the cricket gods, but for the most part this is bad.

If Dobell is right, then the top seven will be Crawley, Lees, Root (c), Stokes, Bairstow, Pope, Foakes. Good job they picked eight bowlers (Wood, Woakes, Robinson, Overton, Mahmood, Fisher, Leach, Parkinson) to fix the batting when it ends up 130 all out to Roach and co.

The 'Make Broad captain' crew
It would be pure chaotic nonsense but I'd be somewhat willing to give this a try.

If I were to pick a 16-man squad with a gun to my head it'd be:

Burns
Crawley
Bohannon
Root
Stokes
Bairstow
Foakes
Wood
Broad
Anderson
Parkinson

Lees
Livingstone
Robinson
Mahmood
Leach
  • Bohannon is the only guy averaging 40+ in the county game
  • Lees is the back-up opener who first springs to mind
  • Livingstone iscabout three cricketers in one
  • Broad and Anderson are the best for Robinskn and Mahmood to learn from
  • Might not lose 3-0 to the West Indies

Am I the only one who thinks its was good of England to bench both Anderson and Broad?

I think its a step in the right direction- afterall, you need to give chances to the next set that would carry your bowling. With the rotation policy, one has seen that Anderson and Broad end up playing only 50-60% of the games they are selected for. Hence, to gradually phase them out, might not be a bad idea afterall.

I think it's unexpected given the problems have been with the batting and it's going to be all the same faces (exception Alex Lees) lining up in the next series.

Broad has averaged 34 in the last 12 months, Anderson has averaged 100+ in 3rd & 4th innings. He has 8 wickets in 14 innings in the last two years in the second half of a match. So, statistically speaking it's not without some merit.

They are both centrally contracted so it's quite possible they return in the summer.

You kind of want to see them go out on a high, like McGrath and Warne did, but the team has been so bad that there haven't been many. :lol

Broad averaged 26 whilst Jimmy averaged 23 at an economy of 1.8 in their most recent series with absolutely zero support from their batsmen. It is absolute nonsense to drop them especially when they seem to work well with Wood in tandem.

Also as already pointed out, it makes perfect sense to try and fix the batting part of the side by selecting a bunch of newbie bowlers and Alex Lees. Oh and what happens if they lose an opener? Who do they turn to?

Two best openers of the last five years are in the squad if someone gets injured.

It already seems like a missed opportunity to freshen up the top 3. Lees is the predictable pick but I'd have liked them to have taken Haines or Yates and Bohannon along for the ride also, really where would be the harm?

Also I really don't understand the logic of not taking Broad or Anderson, absolute madness.
