England tour to South Africa December 2015/February 2016

Sorry thats out ... the third Umpire has bottled it, went with the safe option. The replays based on what was on display that seemed out.

I'd have given it personally but I doubted it was going our way once the soft decision of not out was given by the onfield umpires.

I agree it was not easy, these type of dismissals rarely are, but honestly based on what I saw, I felt it was a very clear catch. Often these decisions come down to which side one is rooting for - to a supporter of the fielding side those usually look out, while to the batting side supporters those would have looked not out.

However in this case I felt it was rather clear, and I am a neutral here. Even SA fans would have felt it was out, and at best would have been hoping it was given not out. These type of catches are often very hard to tell, but in this case, there was enough evidence to suggest it was taken.

It was definitely out, but I think that Stokes' reaction caused the soft decision to be not out. Once that happens, the third umpire isn't going to screw up his mate.

Also its ABD !! Any other guy, okay, but ABD I mean England are on top here, but if he is n.o by end of day's play that position could have turned on its head.

Faf's terribly run continues against spin. His India tour looked like a phone book, and now he falls cheaply to Moenn Ali, not exactly playing the cleverest of shots. England firmly on top.

Moenn gets one more batsman looking to attack him.

WHAT THE HELL IS COOK PLAYING AT?!

Sorry for the caps, but that has made me very angry. End of the day, 37 overs till the new ball, need another wicket and Cook bottles it. He's had a very bad test so far. Hardly used Stokes when Woakes hasn't looked like taking a wicket.[DOUBLEPOST=1451228439][/DOUBLEPOST]

We would have been firmly on top if Cook had some balls.

Nick Compton has a similar technique to Michael Vaughan excluding the turning head…

Maybe push Compton to open and replace Hales for Vince.

Really can’t see Hales having the temperament to open in test cricket maybe a fast 20-30 runs but he only seems to be able to bat in one style which is suited for limited overs.

We need a full time spinner that is something high on the list and not Patel. (Ali is a part timer, why are England failing to recognise this?)

They're not failing to recognise it. Who is the full time spinner they would be replacing him with?

Elgar has played well and ab looked good but got a good one from broad. Amla is obviously in terrible form and needs to find it soon. But less said about faf and van zyl the better. Terrible shots. Meanwhile QDK smashed a 100 for the titans while they were in terrible vs the cobras, can't be long before they can't ignore him anymore.

I would say advantage is 60-40 to england right now. Unless proves me wrong we are in trouble here.

I missed the end phase of play ... what did Cook do? He seemed doing okay till I was watching.

Well he got a duck, didn't review a snick edge (tough one), hardly bowled Stokes who looked a real threat and didn't review the Elgar LBW when he really should of. With a few overs left of the day, removing Elgar and the chance to bowl at a night watchman, he should have rolled the dice. A bad couple of days in my opinion. He's turned a corner in his captaincy in the last few series, but a poor Test so far for the skipper.

Woakes for me bowled without luck today, but showed why he is regarded as the likely new ball replacement for Jimmy

Nothing like watching England play test cricket.

Want to make a few points here-

1) A lot of partial people here are on about Gary Ballance. He is the worst batsman I have seen in my twenty years of watching cricket. I hope he gets an opportunity in SA and I'd love to see Steyn/Morkel school him. He had a flattering average early in his career because he played Sri Lanka and India at home. He is a mediocre county level batsman in English conditions and he will be a sitting duck in the sub continent and Australia.

2) Domestic averages of SA batsmen is a tricky stat to judge people on simply because SA is a very tough place to bat. I might add, I have no reservations about Cook being drafted in etc. etc.

3) If managed properly, this England team has the ability to be a team like the Aussies of the 90's and early 00's as well as the West Indies of old. I don't see the depth that England has in any other side in any format.

4) Ben Stokes is not a number 8. He's your number 5/6 and mark my words, he will make 5000 plus runs and take 300 test wickets. Most importantly, he will win England tests, alone.

My XI for the two teams

England

Cook (c)
Compton
Root
Taylor
Bairstow
Stokes
Buttler
Ali
Woakes
Broad
Finn

SA

Cook
Elgar
AB (c)
Amla
du Plessis
Duminy
de Kock
Steyn
Abbott
Morkel
de Lange

I don't think Gary Ballance is pretty to watch but I think he'll come back and do some great work for England. He'll probably get better for being dropped. If he's used as a number 5 batsman, like he has been all his career, I reckon he'll have a test average of 45. I suppose the question at the moment for a lot of people is, who out of the following(in their preferred position) would score the most runs:
Hales at 2
Bell at 3
Vince at 4
Ballance at 5

I reckon the answer is Bell or Ballance out of those. I need to be convinced by James Vince with a huge first class season.

As for England's depth, I don't think we do have great depth. One area that isn't looking too bad is the seam bowling. After Anderson and Broad, there are quite a few guys that are all about the same standard give or take. Woakes, Plunkett, Finn, Wood, Jordan, Footitt and Brooks could all take wickets at test level.

However, we don't have a full time spinner worth picking at present. If there's an injury in the batting department, I worry about who there is to come in, and although Buttler may come back better than ever, with him out of the side there really isn't a decent keeper to pick.

I notice Jimmy Anderson wasn't in your team. Surely he is still England's best bowler?

Ben Stokes is already England's number 6. He's been batting there for the last 11 tests.
