Europa League Thread

Ha ha I know, glad we won it, but the fact that I watched it at home instead of the pub as I do for most important matches shows how much I really care about the Europa

Nothing compares to the champions league win, end of. And nothing ever will

That's true - 1999 will forever be my greatest night, as far as watching Utd is concerned.

Chelsea are the defending champions of Europe, as well as the Europa League. They'll cherish it until May 25.

And that judas has now become the first player in history to win the World Cup, Euros, Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup and the Golden Boot (Euro 2012). FFS! :(

After all those trophyless seasons, maybe he does deserve it.:p

It's a step in the right direction but the competition is still way too bloated.

Would be interesting to see what happens in the case of English/Spanish/German sides winning both the Champions League and the Europa League in the same year. Do they get to replace both the 3rd and 4th placed sides in the league in that case? :D

Haha, that would be legendary.

4th spots need to abolished full stop. finishing 4th is rubbish, real sociedad, schalke and arsenal are the benefactors this year. Arsenal are the only big name in that lot but they've been pretty guff, no one would miss any of those teams, plus, the nations from outside the elite leagues are now at least throwing up competitive teams.

Basel, Shakthar, Galatasary, Porto, CSKA, Celtic have all acquited themselves pretty well and give the CL more intrigue.

It's fantasy talk but I'd love it if only 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the Premier League got into the Champions League, and 3rd playing a play-off round. It would really increase competition in Europe. I think the Europa League should be scrapped.

Or you could bring back the Cup Winners' Cup.

Consider these two results and it'll tell you all you need to know about the relative states of Scottish and Welsh football right now. Depressing.

Hibs 0-7 Malmo

Swansea 4-0 Malmo

I don't think it says anything about welsh football on the whole, just the EPL is so far in front of the SPL it's not funny. (it's incredible to think about 20 years ago rangers were probably the strongest team in the whole UK)

swansea have 2 welsh players in their starying XI, and cardiff have more scots in their first team than they do welsh players, and a manager.

that said, it bugs me that wales always seem to end up with one or two world class players. We haven't produced anyone even on the same planet as Bale or Giggs for about 40 years.

I just wish the Scottish teams would be what Cardiff/Swansea have done and join the "English" league.
Hibs get smaller gates than many league 1 sides and also get outbid on wages. Slow death and the alternative is to a Hearts/Rangers.

I'd prefer that not to happen really, pretty sure dundee utd would end up in the championship at best, possibly league 1, european football would be a distant dream and the old firm would laugh all the way to the bank like they always do. I can't see why the EPL would relegate two of their own teams in order to give scottish ones a leg up though so I doubt it'll ever happen (unless FIFA eventually manage to force the home nations to join up into a UK team in which case the logical step is a UK league)

we are a total mess just now though, just not producing any quality these days at all.
