Schumacher Continues To Dominate!

schumi.JPG

Saturday 17th March 2001,Sepang,Malaysia

Michael Schumacher took his second pole of the season in Malaysia, continuing his domination of the weekend. It was a uneventful session, with only cloud covering in the final 20 minutes the only real drama! That cloud cover cooled the circuit a few degrees, and the times started to fall, with Schumacher running 0.2 seconds faster than the rest of the field.

Minardi are still yet to get off the back of the grid, although rookie Alonso is getting closer to moving up.But Marques is still way off the pace of his less experienced team-mate.
The Prost team still look good with J.Alesi, qualifying in 14th place, although Burti is really struggling with his car, only a tenth quicker than the Minardi of Alonso in 20th place.
Jaguar continue their great start to the season, number one Irvine qualifying in the top ten,and Stewart, still among the top 3 teams, qualifying quicker than a Ferrari in 6th place, half a second off pole.
Sauber are still languishing in the mid-field,despite the pre-season promise of consistently being around the top 6.Raikkonen 12th and Heidfeld 13th.
Arrows haven't moved forward at all this season, not getting into the top 10 so far,Verstappen 18th and Bernoldi 19th.
The same can be said for Jordan, consistently being beaten by one of their Honda rivals.Frentzen 9th and Trulli, still recovering from his crash yesterday,11th.
BAR,with one driver at least, have the edge over rivals Jordan,Villeneuve was at the top for most of the session, before being overhauled and couldn't better his time. However,Panis' return to F1 has been a slow one,way off the pace of his team mate in 17th,Villeneuve 8th.
Benetton still don't know whats going on with their car, seemed quick in the winter, but their cars languish in 15th and 16th.
Williams really are back where they belong,at the front,R.Schumacher quicker than both Mclaren's in 2nd,and Montoya 5th.
Mclaren still locked in a battle with Williams, not getting the better of Ralf, but ahead of rookie Montoya,Coulthard back to the front in 3rd and Hakkinen 4th.
Ferrari's Michael Schumacher is the class of the field, top in every session of the weekend, and 0.2 faster than anyone else. However Barrichello is struggling so far, slowest of the top 6 drivers, and slower than a Jaguar in 7th.

Sunday 18th March 2001,Sepang,Malaysia

coul.jpg

Sepang, the scene for the second round of the 2001 FIA Formula One Wprld Championship.March is monsoon season, and it showed with heavy rain falling overnight. The track was completely drenched for the morning warm up,making it a pointless exercise to go out, because the track was likely to dry up,and there was no further rain expected. However, the clouds stayed and the track dried slowly, but by the time the cars had made their way to the grid from their garages, the track was almost dry.As the cars made their way round on the formation lap,the track was damp, the sky was dark, and surely rain was immanent.Everyone started on dries,so according to them,it would remain dry,for the moment at least.

The lights went out,and the toughest race of the year got under way.More chaos for the start as Heidfeld stalled,Fisichella's reactions were slow and he went straight into him, then he was collected by Bernoldi.Heidfeld and Fisichella were out on the spot and Bernoldi came round to retire in the pits.
Meanwhile on the run down to turn 1,Ralf got the jump on his heavier fueled brother, and Stewart got ahead of Hakkinen. But into the switch back to turn 2,Hakkinen was too late on the brakes and hit the back of Stewart, losing his front wing,Stewart continued without damage.Order:R.Schumacher,Michael,Coulthard,Montoya,Stewart and Irvine.
Lap 2 and Stewart was finding it hard to control his heavy car,he makes a mistake and spins, falling behind his team mate and Barrichello to 7th.
Villeneuve was all over the heavier Stewart, the battled for some 16 laps, swapping places numerous times, before Villeneuve and R.Schumacher made their first stops on lap 19.
By lap 27 Barrichello,Irvine,Montoya,Ralf and Coulthard had all pitted. There was bad new for Williams,Ralf fell behind Coulthard, who was one stopping, and Montoya dropped behind Barrichello and Irvine.Schumi and Stewart hadn't stopped, with Stewart right behind Ralf and Coulthard.
On lap 28,having passed both Ralf and David,Mark came in for his only stop.He set some blistering laps and came out with a 6 second lead over Villeneuve in 7th.Again,Villeneuve was much faster than Stewart, and this time,to avoid any more time loss battling,he let Villeneuve through. On lap 42,Stewart was up to 4th after the second round of stops.
On lap 46,Schumacher had a huge lead and everything was perfect in his world,until......he came across Burti in the Prost. But instead of lapping him,he hurtled into the gravel trap, losing his front wing. The two collided.A driver error from Schumi or a loss in concentration from Burti?
Schumacher came back to the pits for treatment on his car,and he rejoined just 2 seconds behind Stewart.Could he hold off the triple world champion for the last 10 laps and score a podium finish in his second ever race?
Stewart was soaking up the pressure well.Lap 54 was when Schumacher made his move.He was on the outside under braking for he hairpin of turn 9,forcing Stewart to take a defensive line. This caused him to have a slow exit, and as they came into the next corner,Schumi squeezed his Ferrari up the inside and into 3rd,with 3 laps to go.
After all of this,it was David Coulthard who came round to win the Malaysian Grand Prix, from Ralf,Michael,Stewart who just held off Barrichello, and Irvine completing the scoring,to get Jaguar's first double points finish.
No improvement for benetton,Fisichella out straight away and Button finishing a lap down in 13th place.Montoya did not have a good race. Before his stop he was going well in 4th,but after that stop he just went backwards, falling behind Barrichello and Irvine and finishing almost a minute behind.Ferrari will feel hard done by,they were controlling the race at the front, before it was most likely a loss in concentration from Burti costing him a sure 10 points.

Race Clasification

1.D.Coulthard 56 laps
2.R.Schumacher +15.223

Constructors Championship

3.Jaguar 7pts
4.Williams 7pts

So we leave the scorching heat of Malaysia, with a British driver at the top of the table, and a British star in the making 3rd in the championship.Next week we go to Brazil,Can Luciano Burti stay out of trouble whilst being lapped, being hit twice, once by Schumi and another time by Hakkinen, who might have scored points if he didn't crash into him,Can Stewart go one better,Can Rubinho become the first Brazilian in 8 years to win their home Grand Prix and will Minardi get off the back row of the grid?
Find out next weekend when we to Interlagos for the 3rd round of the championship.
Until then!

Brilliant story mate. A great drive from Stewart, that Villenueve battle must have been great. Love the screenies :D

Keep it up mate!

Yes although Jacques was almost 45 seconds behind at the end of the race. Well done on your second fourth place finish, and good to see DC win and lead the standings. Start crashes seem to be an expected thing now.

Stewart Goes To The Top At The End Of Friday!

me-1.jpg

Friday 30th March 2001,Sao Paulo,Brazil

At the end of a sunny, chaotic day,it was Jaguar star Mark Stewart who went to the top of the time sheets minutes before the end of the days action, and coming second in the first session.
Minardi still at the back, with Alonso ahead of Marques, but weren't 21st and 22nd in the second session, thanks to J.Alesi.
Prost's Burti came here having had a $25.000 fine given to him for the incidents with Schumacher and Hakkinen,he was 20th and 19th today.Alesi was running well, until he had a horrible accident at turn 6 half way into the first session. His car suddenly launched itself into the wall, and he did not participate in the second session.
Jaguar really have improved their pace this year, with Stewart going to 2nd and 1st in the day although pulled off with engine failure at the end of session one and had a spin later.Irvine didn't have a good day,Coulthard hit the back of him in the first session and then his suspension collapsed just before the pits, and slammed into the wall. He's currently in hospital, but is ok.
Arrows still struggling with their car,not even the home crowd could boost Bernoldi, the Brazilian 19th and 18th and Verstappen 18th and 17th.
Williams are getting closer to becoming a winning team, but today they were slightly off the pace with R.Schumacher 4th and Montoya 6th.
Schumacher is probably still the man to beat, fastest by half a tenth in the first session, but behind by a tenth in the second.Rubinho is still the slowest of the top 6,not even his home crowd could push him up,7th in both sessions.

Schumi Too Quick Heading Into Quali!

schumi.jpg

As the first practice session got under way,it was some 10?C hotter than yesterday, causing problems for some teams, whether or not to use the soft or hard tyres, not knowing if it will be this hot tomorrow.
This morning was a bit quieter than yesterday, there were a few incidents here and there, like Trulli colliding with Bernoldi in the pits,a spin from Panis,Frentzen hitting Villeneuve and M.Schumacher hitting Button who's car suddenly came to a halt.
In terms of the lap times, everyone improved, but no one could go quicker than Schumacher, ahead by a tenth in both sessions.
Stewart had an ok morning, not improving his time in the first session and coming 7th,and in the second session, improving his time from yesterday to go 5th.His team mate,Irvine, missed the first session, but was given the all clear to race in the second.Alesi competed in both sessions.

Third Pole For Schumacher

schumi.jpg

Michael Schumacher, once again takes pole position,in a great battle, which saw the top ten separated by just under 0.7 seconds.
The session was without an accident, but with plenty of action at the top of the timing pages. After 10 minutes,Mark Stewart rolled out of the pits, knowing he has a great chance of snatching pole. His first flying lap was 0.001 seconds slower than Hakkinen's provisional pole time. One lap later,he went 0.153 seconds faster, setting a 1:11.985.Not long later,R.Schumacher popped up,going 0.026 seconds faster than Stewart.Half way into the session, both Ferrari's came out of the garage, with Schumacher going 0.125 faster.Hakkinen popped up to go 0.099 slower, but at the end,Schumi got the margin back to 0.111.Meanwhile Stewart just could not go quicker than his opening lap,a mixture of traffic and mistakes hindering him,but he still starts 4th.No real movement in the positions from this morning.
