West Coast Eagles

With the 2009 season about to arrive The West Coast Eagles have decided to offer 2006 Premiership winning coach John Worsfold a 2 year contract which will take him to the 2011 season. As many would expect John accepted it gratefully.

2008 was a horrid year for the Eagles which saw them finish on the bottom end of the table something the Eagles haven't been used too.

West Coast's first game is against the Bulldogs at the MCG.It is expected that the Bulldogs will start as hot favourites for this clash and rightly so as the Eagles are only a young team. The pre-season cup is a chance for the youth to show how good they are and if there ready to play in the home and away season. One of the main points John has been focusing on is getting the Eagles home ground advantage back and getting their midfield to take the game on and not be afraid to have a few bounces when necessary.Eagles first round draft pick Nic Naitanui is expected to be in the line up to take on the Dogs.We were able to have a chat to John before the Eagles training session.

Reporter:John do you see yourselves as realistic chances of making the top 8 this year?

John:Of Course i do its the start of a new season last year we had most of our young players get some games under their belts and that will hold them in a really good way for this current season.

Reporter:Can you beat the Dogs over their?

John:yep,as a group we have been training really hard and if we can put into the match what we've shown in training i don't see why we couldn't win this match.

Reporter:Will Nic naitanui be playing in this game?

John:Most likely. He's been training very hard lately and he deserves to play a game in Eagles colours.

Reporter:When will the team be announced for the game?

John:Very soon.

Nic Naitanui Leaping like we know he can.

Teams

The West Coast Eagles and the Western Bulldogs teams have been announced an hour before the ball will be bounced at the MCG.The Bulldogs go in as favourites for this game but wont be expecting an easy game as the Eagles always seem to play just that bit better against the Dogs.

Dogs Dominate Early At MCG

Daniel Cross picked up some early possessions

The Western Bulldogs have put some early worries in the Eagles camp with a lead of 20 points at quarter time.Jason Akermanis scored the first of the game withing the first 2 minutes for the Dogs.Eagles haven't looked up to the challenge of the Bulldogs yet.It has been a story of inaccurate kicking with 5 goals 8 between these two sides. The Dogs kicked the first 4 goals of the game before the Eagles thanks to Ben McKinley slotted one through with a minute to go of the quarter.

John Worsfold didn't look a happy man when he was walking down the stairs of the MCG.The crowd was only a small one, just under 23000 people showed up to watch these to sides clash.

The Eagles forward line has yet to work with leads coming from all over the place making it easy for the Western Bulldogs defence to clear the ball and launch a counter attack of their own.

Robert Murphy tackles a young eagle

The Western Bulldogs have made sure the Eagles cant comeback and beat them ending the 3rd quarter with a 83 point lead. The dogs booted 10 goals 6 with the Eagles only scoring the one major in the term.

Robert Murphy was the stand out for the term ending it with a total of 6 goals in 3 quarters.Darren glass was outplayed completely in the term and will be trying to forget this game when he goes into round one of the home and away season.

Jarrod Harbrow was injured during that term.
