Group B
A look at Group B in detail

Congo
Congo have had mixed fortunes in the African Cup of Nations. Back in 1972 they won the cup for
the first time, but ever since then they have slowly gone downhill. In the past 7 African
Cup of nations they have only managed to qualify once. This time round they have a young side hungry
to bring back the form of the past, and produce some quality football that they know Congo can do.
Without many star players, they will need to work as a team if they are to succeed against the likes
of Ghana, Morocco and South Africa in their group. Blackburn defender Christopher Samba is their
stand out player, with many others from French, German, South African, Gabon and Congo sides. They
are very much underdogs in Group B, but they have very chance of sneaking in under the eye of the other
nations.

Player to Watch: Christopher Samba - The 6ft 4in Blackburn defender, is the only Congo player to
be playing in one of the top leagues in the world. Moving from Hertha Berlin in 2007 to Premier League
side Blackburn, he has featured 34 times, and scored 4 goals. At age 23 he is a great young prospect, with
most of the weight of the side on his shoulders. He is a regular starter at Blackburn and will be looking
to give his national side Congo some of the form he has hit with Blackburn. Definitely one of the best
defenders in the tournament, and easily Congo's man to watch. Look out for the defenders strong tackles
and towering headers.

Group Prediction: 4th

Ghana

Ghana have a fantastic record in the African Cup of Nations, but recent African Cup of nations form has not
reflected that history, or their FIFA World Ranking. The highest ranked nation in the competition, and home
support still doesn't give them status as favourites to lift the trophy. What they do have is quality in numbers.
Their top players include Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien, Fenerbah?e and Ghana captain Stephen Appiah and
Sulley Ali Muntari from Portsmouth. There is no doubt that this team has enough quality and support to win
this year's African Cup of Nations, but will poor form in the
competition come to haunt them again. All of
those Ghana supporters will certainly hope not.

Player to Watch: Asamoah Gyan - This 22 year old has already shown his talent at international level, winning
2 caps and scoring 3 goals. This young prospect shows that even among world class players, a young player can
still be recognised as a quality player. He will be hoping to add to his tally of three goals in his short
international career and on the way helping his side through to the quarter finals. Gyan may be young but
his presence is definitely felt when he goes up for headers. He may not be the tallest but he is very strong
in the air and is a good target man. Watch out also for his cool finishing.

Group Prediction: 1st

Morocco

A very mixed history for Morocco in the African Cup of Nations. They have won the competition once back in 1976,
but have had very poor spells also. They have come third, fourth (twice), second and made the quarter finals.
Between those finishes they have been poor, not qualifying 9 out of 22 entries, and made just round one 6 times.
After making it to the final, only to be runners up in 2004, they will be looking to recapture some of the good
form everyone knows they can produce. They have quite a few well capped players such as Mustapha Hadji, Talal
El Karkouri and Marouane Chamakh in their side. They have a good opportunity to make it passed round one and
into the quarter's here in Group B.

Player to Watch: Marouane Chamakh - One of the stars of this Morocco side, at 24 he has played 36 times for
Morocco scoring 12 goals. With a record of 1 goal per 3 games he is Morocco's most prolific goal scorer. They
will need him to be on form in this year's competition, as he holds the key on whether Morocco can progress
or not.

Group Prediction: 2nd

South Africa

Since being allowed to participate in the African Cup of Nations in 1994 they have won it, come second, third
and made the quarter finals. But in the past two competitions they haven't made it past the 1st round. They will
be hoping to return to the top of African football this year. Unlike many of the other nations, there are a
few players based in the home country. There are some quality overseas players such as Aaron Mokoena
(Blackburn), Benni McCarthy (Blackburn) and Quinton Fortune (Leeds). Are South Africa going to be able to
prove to the world that they are one of the best sides in Africa by making it through to the quarter finals?

Player to Watch: Benni McCarthy - The greatest goal scorer South Africa have ever had with 33 goals
in 69 caps. A skillful striker that can and will take on even the best defences and score goals. He loves the
ball played into his feet so he can do his work past the defenders. Has a great first touch and is
lethal one on one. If South Africa get past the first round then he could be a contender for top goal scorer
of the competition.

Group Prediction: 3rd

Benni McCarthy is a force to be reckoned with

Group B could be close with Ghana going through easily leaving South Africa and Morocco fighting out for 2nd place. I can't see Congo doing much though.

Cracking presentation Jack. :)

You never know, that form of '72 may come back :p

Although Morocco are predicted 2nd I think that South Africa have the better looking side. The match between those two will most likely decide who goes through...

Group C
A look at Group A in detail

Cameroon
With the best history in the group in this competition, Cameroon as easily marked as the favourite of the group.
4 titles and 1 runner up and numerous times making it pass the group stages, Cameroon have always had a decent side.
In the last 5 African Cup of Nations, Cameroon have won 2 and got into the Quarter Final 3 times, now that's not a bad
effort. With strength all over and back up for every position, Cameroon are one of the favourites to win the competition,
let alone the group. With all their players playing outside of Cameroon itself, and most playing in top leagues it will be
incredibly difficult to beat Cameroon. Defender Doumb? will have to face team mate Bobo Bald? at one point and
Cameroon have a total of 5 players playing in Britain, a nice little total, I say.

Player to Watch: Samuel Eto'o - The only player to win the African Footballer of the
Year award 3 times, Eto'o is easily one of the most decorated Strikers in the competition. Samuel and Didier Drogba should
take their groups by storm, relatively easily too. He has a good scoring record for Cameroon too with 26 goals in 62
games. He also won UEFA Champions League Best Forward for 2 years running, 2005 and 2006. Eto'o has been
struggling to find his goalscoring boots this season for Barcelona as he has only scored 11 in 23, good by anyones standard
but his.

Group Prediction: 1st

Guinea
Guinea haven't got the best record in the world when it comes to this competition. They have only ever reached one
Final, even that was against unlikely opponents Morocco in 1976 and lost. Somehow though they have reached the
Quarter Finals in the last two times they have qualified. They still have a lack luster squad but this one is capable of reaching
second in their group, as first may be a bit off a climb. With many players not being able to make it to this African Cup of Nations,
they will need to play extra well and Gel as a team together. They will largely have to rely on three players, Bobo Bald? (Celtic),
Pascal Feindouno (Saint-Etienne) and Richard Soumah (Avant Guingamp). They will definitely be battling it out with Mali for
second place but I think that Mali could edge them.

Player to Watch: Bobo Bald? - The 6'3" Celtic defender is the only player in the Guinean team to
have had any experience in the top leagues (excluding France). Playing in France in his early career, he made a name for
himself at Toulouse, where Celtic spotted him and picked him up. He helped Toulouse with promotion but has helped Celtic
even more. 1 time Celtic Player of the Year award in 2002-03, Bobo Bald? has won 158 league appearances, coming on as a sub
just once, and has been influential in what Celtic have won since then. His bravery and strength combined help him do his
trademark headers and tackles.

Group Prediction: 3rd

Mali
One time runner up Mali should easily coast through in second or possibly first. 1972 runner ups (in which lost to Congo)
have got a much better team around now and could cause a few upsets with the likes of Fr?d?ric Kanout? and Mahamadou
Diarra, not to forget Mohamed Sissoko. After winning all their games in Group C whilst Qualifying they only lost once. Against
Guinea, who incidentally are in this group! Going forward Mali are probably, one of the best in the tournament but I can see
them no progressing far as they are prone to have a shaky defence. With 16 of their 23 players over 6 foot! They are obviously
a very dangerous team when it comes to corners with all the team being renowned for their perfect heading, and set piece
capabilities.

Player to Watch: Fr?d?ric Kanout? -The 6'4" tall striker is one of the best strikers in the
competition. The African Footballer of the Year award winner in 2007 is a prolific goalscorer, especially for current club Sevilla.
Starting out at Lyon where he was averaging a goal every 4 games, but being in the build up play to assist goals he was
scouted by then West Ham manager Harry Redknapp. He scored lots of goals (in the appearances he had) for West Ham in the
4 seasons he was there until he got picked up for Tottenham. After scoring 41 goals in the premiership he moved to Sevilla, where
he has scored 47 goals in 91 appearances! Not bad. Prolific for his country as well as he has 11 goals in 19 games. This goal poacher
can play on his own up front or link with another striker, and opens lots of windows for any manager he plays under.

Group Prediction: 2nd

Rwanda
Rwanda have never hosted or got into the final of any African Cup Of Nations before. Scrap that, before this they had only ever
been in it once in 2004! Credit to them, Guinea were in their group then and they drew against them and also picked up a victory.
Compared to other sides in their group and other sides in the competition, Rwanda are easily one of the worst sides. With no
representatives flying out this will make it even harder for the little country, I can see them easily losing 3-0 or 2-0 in most of their
games. Their only decent player is Ren? Tafer who incidentally probably wouldn't even get named in most of the big team's 23
men squad.

Player to Watch: Ren? Tafer - The 6'2" tall centre forward is actually a decent target man up front.
As the rest of the team, he actually doesn't play for any club and only usually plays for fun when he gets the time. The 25 year
old as all the attributes for a good target man such as
Strength and Heading, whilst also being deadly with the ball on the ground. He could nick a few goals at set pieces but I can't really
see him being the top goalscorer of the group or competition. A pity really.

Group Prediction: 4th

SamuelEtoo.png

Samuel Eto'o - Cameroon's main man, he
will be instrumental in their campaign plans.

Cameroon will deffo be a tough side to beat. Although I can see Rwanda beating them ;)

The Mali and Guinea game should be a cracker!

Yeah, two of the best strikers in the World, let alone Africa in this group, in Eto'o and Kanoute. Kanoute being so tall, poses a threat to any defence, and with Eto'o's pace, he apparently can outrun a ferret :p

My prediction is for Cameroon to win the group and the competition. They will be really tough to beat with the likes of Eto'o. Love the team descriptions - KUTGW! :)

Group D will be up probably tomorrow due to the City game being on telly tonight :p

Once we get through the Group D review we will be hoping for quicker updates!

Thanks for all your comments :)

I'll be looking at your atory to see who performs, as some players may perform well and I might buy them for my Coventry team on my story :)

Sorry for not updating. Been hit by a lot of coursework at school. This weekend there will deffo be a update :)
