FOOTBALL Football Manager Discussion

Defeating Barcelona, Arsenal, Chelsea is no easy job.

Yes it is.

Play the game properly starting from rock bottom. My current save I started off unemployed got the managers job at Droylsden, where they were languishing in last place, just keeping us up first season. Desperately struggled to find anyone willing to come in, and then only on frees and loans, but we had a stellar season finishing first by twelve points.

Once again we desperately struggled to get anyone to come into the club and we were quickly going into the red. Managed a meagre 19th with a very young squad relying on rejects from the youth academys of Championship teams. By this time I'd realised that I was going to really struggle to progress the squad and three quarters into the next season with us 18th I applied for the Yeovil managers job who were in the relegation zone of League two swapping places with Cambridge who were a place out of it. Deciding that I wanted to complete the job at Droylsden for the season and make sure they were safe before I moved, I asked to join Yeovil at the end of the year. If they stayed up or down it'd still be a move up from Droylsden as I'd be getting a proper wage, the players would be full time (at Droylsden the majority were part time as I simply didn't want to push us further into the financial mire) and I'd have a more sound footing from which to build. Yeovil did stay up by a point and I kept Droylsden relatively safe finishing 19th.

First season at Yeovil things were quite a bit easier than they were at Droyslden because I was now allowed 4 scouts which gave me a hell of alot of extra players to potentially bring through the team but more importantly I was able to bring in some very good loan signings. I finished 16th which was a pretty decent achievement from the state we were in when I came in. The following season we once again had a decent rise and I was finally able to bring in my own tactic after getting in players capable of playing it. Finished 13.

Current season we're doing brilliantly, in four at the moment still in with a shout of getting automatically promoted and I'm almost definitely in the play offs. Note when playing I've followed LLM rules so you can only employ staff who apply for positions, take on players you're scout has scouted or would realistically have knowledge of, even then I've scouted them as would be done in real life, have used only my own tactics and training schedules and have tried to play as realistically as possible as the game is too easy if you use player search and the like.

Twist of fate as you can see from the league table screenshot is that Cambridge are now a couple points ahead of us only two seasons ago from Yeovil relegating them to the Blue Square Premier.

Doesn't LLM rules involve not signing players on loan, or is that just suggested :p

Not as far as I'm aware. I'd find it unrealistic to not have loans, they are the life blood of most lower league teams.

Nah, I think you are allowed. Have just had a quick look.

Sounds like you're doing really well Themer. :thumbs

I tried to do one of them saves, using LLM rules, but it just wasn't for me. Kept getting frustrated at how crap my players were and I like playing with teams where I know about the players I have at my disposal. Found it quite boring, despite doing quite well (got to the playoffs when expected to finish lower table but lost in the final).

I am currently in 2015 after starting unemployed. Here is an overview of my career:

Code:
Hired by Thurrock in July 2010

Thurrock 2010/11 - Blue Square South - Sacked after 242 days in charge - Sat in the relegation zone

Hired by Fano in March 2011

Fano 2010/11 - Serie C2/B - Finished 7th (Can't remember where they were when I joined but definitely below that)
Fano 2011/12 - Serie C2/B - Finished 8th
Fano 2012/13 - Serie C2/B - Finished 2nd (1 point off 1st, but gained promotion through playoffs)
Fano 2013/14 - Serie C1/A - Finished 16th (Survived relegation in playoffs)
Fano 2014/15 - Serie C1/A - Finished 6th (Lost out on playoffs final game of the season because of our head-to-head record with the 5th placed team)
I let my contract run out at the end of the season and am currently looking for a new job. I am also the Georgia national team manager. Best result to date is a brilliant 2-2 draw against England. Probably my best ever result on any version of FM.

it's not that hard though either.

starting in lower divisions is a nightmare, getting promoted is far harder than trying to win the league, if you don't manage it one season then your best players all want transfers to go up a division, then when you get promoted trying to keep all your players happy and the better ones from leaving as you get taken apart week in week out is another nightmare. Buying players with a 100k transfer budget is so hit and miss, you have to be prepared to blow half your budget on some idiot that can't get a game at middle of the table team, don't even bother looking at picking up players from the good teams. they all price them way too high. then when all that's done, if you've taken on a team in a lesser league you'll struggle to keep your best players from leaving to play in spain or england.

I'm all set in my game, massive stadium, worldwide rep, oodles of cash. but it's taken like 20 seasons to get anywhere near that.

I started in the jupiler league in holland with helmond sport, 3 seasons to get promoted, bit lucky in the play offs, if you've seen how the dutch promotion system worked you'd see how mental it is.

5 seasons to get near the top of the table, and then an almighty crash as my first season in europe stretched my squad to breaking point, another 3 seasons to recover. Then no money because the board took out a huge loan to upgrade the 4000 capacity stadium to a 17,000 seater one. picked up a serbian guy in january who despite not having the best stats scored for fun. finally won the league on the last day of the season due to a surge sparked by the serb.

Then we got taken over and the guy pumped in 6m to take our training and youth academy up from average to absolute top of the range. First two seasons we brought in two brilliant youngsters. I already had a good goalkeeper and striker. sold the goalie for 24m and the striker for 15m, gave the youngsters the place in the team. The goalie that came through our youth academy was probably the best goalkeeper in the game I've ever seen. Started dominating holland but struggled in europe in the knock outs, and had to sell the serb to real madrid.

about 6 seasons later, after winning 5 more titles and beginning to waltz through defenses in holland for 3 seasons I had a horror season, and changed the way we played to a more physical, defensive way. 2 seasons later got to the final of the CL, came back down from 1-0 with a goal in the 88th minute and won in extra time. The best of the team was poached but the foundations were good and several players were youth products and extremely loyal. re-built and 3 seasons later started a run a 7 consecutive CL finals with 5 of them won. then the board built a mega stadium, everyone kinda decided we were worth staying with and now I'm pretty much the dominant team... and aged 66 so I'm really near the end and will have to start again soon. sigh.

The edit skin colour option is pretty cool. More of the same with a few nice new features and stats/teams are all updated. Can't complain, if it's any sort of standard bearing the past 2 minutes of FM12 are easily better than my last 2 hours I spent on FM11 over the past month.

Sold Paulo Ferreira to Sampdoria and the fans felt my decision to allow him to leave was unacceptable! Don't know whether to laugh or to cry really. :facepalm

36% done.

I've been following the blogs this year, am a member of the SI forum, and have to say that this year it looks very very polished.

Can't wait to get stuck in.

Nearly halfway through the download, but still got the best part of another hour to go. Looking forward to giving it a test run.
