I wouldn't say that. There are quite a few batsmen competing for that spot. These include Andrew Strauss, Graeme Smith, Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara, Younis Khan, AB De Villiers, Thilan Samaraweera, Michael Clarke and Ricky Ponting. In terms of rankings, yes, he is #1 but the competition for best test batsman is very stiff.
And the fact he's recognised by the ICC as the #1 in the world can't hurt his case. I certainly rate him very highly, and he'd definitely be the top Test opener in the world atm, that's for sure. Quality player.
This is ironic, because I recall earlier in the year the Indian players were causing a furore over the ICC rankings, for Tendulkar being outside the All Time Top 20 and now it's being called upon here to say Gambhir is the No.1 test opener in the world.....
The poll choices make my head hurt. Also, it is interesting that there is not a single poll choice that actually implies that Hughes is better at Gambhir in any of the formats.
I like Gambhir's play, but i'd like to see him score runs in test cricket in Aus, Eng and SA first. Even Sachin hasnt done all that well in SA, though that first ton he got in 92 was sensational, so was the 1996 and 2000 ones too!
Robelinda raises a pretty good point. Gambhir hasn't scored really big runs overseas yet, but when he does he'll definitely be one of the world's elite batsman.
