General Cricket Discussion

A little late to the party here, was travelling over the last few days, hence.

I followed T20 WC more because it’s easier to follow due to its duration, but again didn’t feel any passion/ emotion when India didn’t make the final.

Franchise leagues should hopefully fasten the reduction of interest for people in nation vs nation sport. Franchise leagues can remove the toxic ‘fake nationalism’ while continuing to employ cricketers and also feed the bottom line of the respective board.

To the point on India not making the final not evoking any emotion- I agree with you, but for a different reason. Our team is Sh**t and didnt deserve as we didnt select the best that could have represented us in the format. Secondly, the introduction of T20 and rapid spread has brought about an overkill in cricket. ODI and Tests are getting less competitive as some teams choose to field sides solely for T20, raking in the moolah.

Franchisee league can never reduce the national interest for a couple of reasons:

Franchisees dont fully represent a city of community. A Mumbai franchisee doesnt resonate with me, a person from Pune(2nd biggest city in Maharastra). It doesnt resonate with the other cities like Nagpur or Nashik either. Similarly, The Gujarat Titans or Rajasthan Royals is least liekly get get massive fan following from Saurashtra or Jodhpur.

Cricket as sport has always been nation vs nation more, as opposed to Baseball or Football where the individual clubs are more powerful than the national footie associations. Do not see that happening in cricket as some board like the BCCI have ensured that the authority to stage the league remains with them. Fans follow countries more than leagues.

A proper* divisional international T20 structure of some kind might have worked. Different legs in different countries, played annually, promotion and relegation. People talk about ODI cricket being dead, yet the last World Cup final was the greatest we've seen and because of England the format has moved forward a lot. No one ever mentions if getting rid of it also means the same for Women's cricket. Which would essentially leave the with one format. I do wonder how many of these people, those in the public eye, are not doing out of self interest of basically lobbying for it's abolition because they stand to benefit from the T20 leagues that would fill the gaps.
Proper divisional structures can still be implemented for ODI, Test and T20 to spread the game wisely. The ICC can still do it, but not sure whether they will actually do it or not. the game development arena has been in disarray since a long time. Else, you might have had the likes of Kenya being a force to reckon with, had they been given adequate support post their CWC 2003 antics.

You are also right in stating that T20 leagues wont be able to fill any gaps that eradication of a particular format brings about

Tagenarine Chanderpaul, who also played Larry Gomes in the movie 83!

Stop taking things from the Cricinfo quiz section :lol :laughter:

Virat Kohli is the best batsman of this generation.

Virat is the best batsman playing today.

Virat, can be argued, certainly in the conversation as the best batsman of all time.

Virat is the all time greatest batsman from India.

Somehow missed this. Quite funny that none of this are true and his very spot in an Indian ATG XI remains ever so questionable with each test innings of his.

Never been a fan of 4-day Tests but it's stats like this that make the case for them. Teams are playing faster, batsmen are getting less runs, 3-day Tests are becoming more and more common. Honestly wouldn't mind if we cut off a day and freed up the cramped calender.
