Hindi Music Thread

Hey does anybody else feel the songs from Delhi 6 Arziyan and Rehna Tu have a hint of Khwaja Mere Khwaja from Jodha Akbar in them, Because I certainly do.

Btw, Started listening to Arziyan today and I must say the Tabla playing in that song masterful :hpraise

Yes a little bit. But the songs are of different pace altogether. And the tune might resemble in a few places, but overall both are entirely different songs and its not that easy to say the similarity.

A few selected Indian songs from the 50/60s I like.

I have alot of memories listening to them on the cassette when i was around 7/8. (not in the 50/60s ofcorse FS, you dumbass)

Woah, Usy, that just throws your gangster reputation out the window you know.

Bump. CBA to post a new thread for what I'm about to post. I'd just like to share a piece of Tabla with you. It's a short solo, one of my favourite Taals.

I play it BTW if you hadn't noticed.

:clap:clap:clapFANTASTIC! Is that you who is playing it? WOW WOW WOW! Mind blowing piece! I just loved the gradual increase in speed. You actually hit a terrific speed when playing it.

I got a tabla set from India in November 2008. But the thing is, I have been looking for a teacher to teach me tabla (some here are very costly, like $35 per hour and one class per week). I play the tambourin and I have been wanting to graduate to higher quality percussion instruments like the tabla and the dholak. Hope I can get a teacher (cost effective) who can help me learn to play good tabla (I want to play like how you played that one!)

Thanks for the comments Sai. Lol, I'm not actually meant to speed up, my Guru actually keeps scolding me that.

If you master one Indian Instrument, then it will be considerably easier to learn another one as they all are linked to each other in one way or another. Hence I'm also currently learning the Dhol. $35 per hour does sound costly, maybe you should search for a teacher that teaches a whole group, it will be cheaper and that has got me to this stage.

Yeah, thats why I want to learn the tabla before learning the dholak, etc. Tabla is the tougher one and if you master it (learn it well), you should be able to learn the other ones easily. But it doesnt necessarily work the other way round (I have heard a lot of people say this).

Anyways coming back to Hindi music, recently listened to the songs of "Kambakth Ishq" and "Love Aaj Kal". The songs of Kambakth Ishq are quite good and catchy. I liked two songs in Love Aaj Kal, but the rest are of the skip variety. But the reviews are good for it. So maybe will listen to them more.

Nice stuff Leggie!

I used to play the tabla and harmonium. I also sang with it as well. My teacher said I was really good, but I just couldn't be bothered pursuing it lol. I didn't like doing it lol. My parents made me do it on a Saturday morning along with Punjabi class lol. Realllyyyy boring.

I didn't like learning Indian Music for the few years, after that I really started enjoying it because you have covered all the basics and can start progressing to any level.

Oh man! Can we just swap our brains then?:p I would love to learn the tabla and harmonium. I attend devotional meetings here in the US and they sing Bhajans (songs sung in praise of God) and they play the table and harmonium there which is fantastic. I want to learn it.

By the way Leggie, is it possible to learn the tabla online or through those VCD/DVD's that they sell in India? I have got a VCD "Learn to play Tabla" but since I am serious about all this, I havent started watching the VCD yet (dont want to learn half baked stuff)

Learning Tabla is possible. But if you can't get a teacher then I think your best bet is a VCD/DVD. Just don't try and rush into playing extravagant Taals otherwise you will realise you technique faltering which is vital to become a good player.

Ask the people at the Bhajans where they learnt their Tabla from or ask if they could possibly take a few minutes out and start you off. People at Mandirs/Gurdwara's are always willing to help you and they want to keep out tradition and culture alive via these Instruments and pass it on to our generation.

Most of the guys who play tabla at the Bhajans learnt it in India. I asked them if they could teach me but time constraints are heavy (all of them are students).
