How on earth is Twenty20 the future of cricket?

BOycott CL T20...Ban IPL....For the sake of test cricket..End the evil Regime of the BCCI:mad:

I admire you're constructive posts in this thread Mr.Ponting.

Anyways, I would agree that they hype of T20 is higher than it should be. I reckon one T20 each tour is acceptable, no more than that though. Even as an Indian I don't totally agree with the IPL as it taking invaluable players away from Countries just to hit some 6's or uproot some stumps. Maybe the IPL once every 4 years or so? I mean the Champions League T20 has already stirred some controversy with the India-England series. I personally do not believe that Test Cricket (Proper Cricket) should be 'adjusted' for the sake of T20 Cricket.

Backing up Feelin Blue here, I would say in many years all these mindless slogs would replace the cover drive or the flick of the pads. Of course there are proper ways to hit sixes like Yuvraj and Gilchrist show. Also bowling my be affected, Young Bowlers will think it is alright to bowl a negative line in order to keep the run flow low, Of course that is acceptable sometimes, But I fear the corridor of uncertain line will be forgotten.

Overall I not saying that T20 should be scrapped, But controlled so it is not the main source of Cricket for Newbies.

Yeah, Hong Kong sixes is 10x better then Twenty20 as it isn't ruining cricket. Its helping people understand the game like you said. BBCI and the creators of all the IPL and CL 20/20 tourneys etc don't care about cricket, they just want the money. No matter what MacLovin tries to say, IPL is ruining cricket and the only reason its still running is for the money.

Feelin Blue? added 2 Minutes and 28 Seconds later...

Yeah, true. Not only will bowlers be scared out of the game, the ones that do stay wont be tyring to seam it off the line and length of corridor of uncertainty, or trying to draw in a batsmen to an edge etc. Seam and reverse swing etc will be forgotten. It will just be about stopping runs.

It could turn out okay if some of the support that Twenty20 brings in, could make some people recognise Tests being generally more superior(in my view) and could make the support for Tests grow as well. It could intice new countries into cricket and then after they play Twenty20 they could try out the other forms of the games. I hope it isn't the future of cricket but if it is, then you don't know whether support for the other forms of the game will rise or fall.

Come on Cricket was too good in 2003 and 04 when there were just ODI's and Tests. There was no IPL,no CL T20 and no ICL and yeah tournaments like ICL are reducing the zeal of Domestic Cricketers they're thinking that by playing some good knocks they can be signed by the ICL.It's removing their passion to play for their country

Yup IPL is ruining cricket but the main source of the whole T20 hype is BCCI and Kapil Dev. I dont blame the viewers if they like T20 over tests or ODIs because the ones who are now ruling this game are influencing the viewers.

I wasn't really saying that HK sixes will motivate other countries to play cricket but it will get more and more viewers all over the world. e.g if you're living somewhere in Africa or North America and you dont know what cricket is but you tune in to the TV and see HK sixes is going on and then you will be curious to know what these guys are playing, how do they play that? And when you will undertand the game you will actually start enjoying the game.

I'd just like to make this post to advertise my article.

:p

Obviously what I meant by Africa was for countries like South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco and some others. Those aren't poor countries.

It wont work out. Didn't any of these idiots work out that it would kill cricket!?

To put it simply;
No kid would want to be a bowler growing up. They will all want to follow in the footsteps of there heroes who are smashing sixes. They wont want to follow in the footsteps of someone getting hammered out of the ground.

It only takes 1 second of thinking and actually using your brain. No one would want to be a bowler and you cant play cricket without bowlers.

Test cricket is not dying, and it never will. It is much more entertaining and competitive then Twenty20 cricket. Twenty20 is extremely boring, especially considering if you hit 180-200 in your twenty20 and you take 2 early wickets its practically game over. In test cricket, if your losing after the first innings a well structured and smartly batted innings can save you, or if your fielding, a determined and fierce session or 2 can get you right back into the game.

Actually stop and think about it for a second. Twenty20 wont save cricket, nor will it become the most favored format.

Agree with every single word there. Especially the kids wanting to become bowlers bit, I never looked at it like that. One thing's for sure T20 = Forget the traditional rule of bowling outside off stump.

I don't get why BCCI have a say in what the ICC do it's so stupid. I've never been a big fan of T20 sure I get excited when the T20WC happened but meh. I'd rather watch a test series or one day series than a T20WC.

We need to control T20. International T20 matches should be played out very very sparingly. I'm not a fan of those one or two T20 matches played in a series.

T20 should be played mostly in domestic cricket, such as the IPL in India, The Big Bash in Australia, and the T20 Cup in England. This will increase the interest in domestic cricket, and we can see many talented players on a big stage. The T20 world cup should replace the Champions Trophy and should be the only International T20 event, purely for entertainment purposes and to get rid of what I think is a useless tournament.

All those countries have some very poor regions.
