This is bugging me.

I have no idea on how to kick a football properly, without injuring my toes. I can pass alright, with the inside of my foot, but for long range shots and clearances, I'm clueless.

I've done some looking up, and have found two methods - the laces method, and the inside of the foot method. Found some pointers for both, have yet to try them out.

Does anyone have any good tips on how to clear a football well?

That was a fast reply, and when defending with three strikers in the box, passing the ball towards your own goal isn't exactly the smartest move...

Any mode of kicking the ball without using your toes or the outside of your foot is fine. Don't expect to be able to pummel it like Rooney or make 70 yard passes. Only I can do that.

Seriously though, your probably best off going with laces.

Hmm, okay. I'll try it out tomorrow probably, let you know the results...

I thought everyone is taught to kick with their laces when they learn football?

When your 6, you are. The best way to kick the ball with most control is with the side of your foot. Try to open your body up when your kicking the ball so you don't kick yourself.

I pass with the side of my foot but to get real power behind a shot you have to hit it with your laces. To see the desired effect take a look at Wayne Rooneys volley against Newcastle on youtube. That is how you hit a ball with your laces. There is no one right way of doing it. All the obvious stuff like get your body in the right position and a big backlift and follow through from your right leg. Hit it with the outside of your boot properly and it will swerve/spin the other way.

Don't hit it with your toe, that just is a toe poke and is pretty rubbish tbh :p Google or youtubefor a proper answer too.

In my school they just tossed us a ball and let us go figure it out ourself. What's worse, we only stared using a hard football from grade 10 onwards (so for 2 years). Before that it always used to be a rubbish soft volleyball thing. So, quite clearly, I developed the habit of smashing the ball with my toe. During grade 10 till now, I would end up limping after every match. Never had to kick a lot as defender earlier, all I had to do was pass, but I'm frustrated that everytime I do try to clear it I smash by big toe in, or hit it with no power.

So I'll try both laces and side foot thing tomorrow, see how it goes.

And it flippin' hurts as well!

Let's be honest here, nothing beats a perfectly executed toe punt, I mean it really does make the pain worthwhile! ;)

Indeed it does. And it is the best option with a soft ball :p

I've managed to get passing going well so far, have been working on it this whole year, just need to implement it in a few matches. I have to stop then do it, haven't gotten it fluid yet, so need to do it more.

But haven't tried the laces shots yet, really need to practice that.

Try and make sure you can practice as much as you can. All you need is a wall and keep using the inside of your foot and once you get a bit more confident, start using your laces. I barely ever use laces for short passing, or even long. I kind of do for long but I have a strange technique. I use the bit that is a tad inside the big toe and angle my run up, whether it is a goal kick or a moving ball. Hard to explain.

I can only practice in short bursts, family doesn't take too well to me kicking a ball in the house, and my building security guards will be very happy to confiscate the ball at any given chance :p
