Pakistan vs Bangladesh 1st T20 - 02/08/2014
Pakstan and Bangladesh got their T20 campaign under way yesterday with Pakistan coming into the contest as firm favorites after comprehensive victories in both the test and ODI match. Pakistan won the toss and unsurprisingly chose to bowl first once again wanting to press the advantage their bowlers have over the Bangladeshi batting line up.
The start was no different than the ODI witht the Bangladeshi top order capitulating against some accurate fast bowling by Junaid Khan and Muhammad Irfan, three of the top four failed to score a single run. However Tamim Iqbal was solid and began to show form for the first time on the tour, he built meaningful partnerships with Mushfiqur Rahim and Nasir Hossain taking Bangladesh to 74 for 4 before the 5th wicket fell. Tamim worked his way towards a solid half century before being dismissed by a Umar Amin quicker delivery trapping him in front for 42.
Once Tamim was removed Pakistan held things back and made sure Bangladesh could not accelerate and bowled them out for 109 with 10 balls to spare. Muhammad Irfan was the pick of the bowlers ending with figures of 14 for 3. Bangladesh felt they were 30 runs short against an inform Pakistan top order.
Nasir Jamshed set the tone for Pakistan smashing two fours from the first two balls of the innings, cutting S Islam up and over the fly slip fielder to the vacant third man area. S Islam then came back brilliantly by bowling a slower one on the stumps and Jamshed could not resist trying to loft it over mid off only to sky it giving a easy catch. Pakistan then suffered from a dramatic collapse going from 8 for 1 to 16 for 6 with a mixture of rash shots, suicidal running and brilliant bowling. Pakistan would need to build some solid partnerships to recover from such a dire situation but this was not to happen with 3 further wickets falling and only 39 on the board.
At 39 for 9 and 71 runs to win the game was over, or was it? Pakistan's number 10 and 11 Junaid Khan and Muhammad Irfan certainly did not think so, both began to work the ball around without taking any risk, as despite all the wickets falling the run rate required was still hovering around 6 an over, they showed the temperament that the top order lacked, a lesson for them indeed. Both Junaid and Irfan found the occasional boundary as well to make sure the run rate did not get out of hand. They took the score to 82, requiring another 28 to win from 22 balls. It was at this point that Irfan was beating by a seeming delivery on leg stump handing Bangladesh their first win of the tour and indeed on this occasion they were deserving of it, being the better side with both bat and ball on the day.
Pakistan will be dissapointed not to have chased down 109, non of their top 7 even got to double figures, and when a scorecard shows the number 10 and 11 batsman getting the highest scores of the innings the top order should feel they let the side down.
Bangladesh will no go into the final match of the tour with some much needed momentum and would love to end the tour with a clean sweep of the T20's. They should however be weary of a Pakistan come back as Pakistan will certainly want to avoid being whitewashed in the shortest format.
Stay tuned to the final T20.
