Story ICC World Test Championships 2005/06 [C2005]

Fixtures Announced

After a delay of a few days, the ICC finally announced the list of fixtures for their test championship tournament. Originally, it was expected that the ICC would pick a single neutral country for all matches to be hosted. This was later scrapped as the fans did not like the idea of not being able to watch this tournament live. As a result, the ICC has decided to award each participating country at least one game, with Australia and England getting two games because they are the top 2 teams in the world. Exact locations have not been announced but will be announced at a later date.

India vs. Australia [MCG]

Many delayed flights and visa problems over with, the Indian team is finally ready to get some cricket action in this mega tournament. Welcome to the MCG for live cricketing action between India and Australia. Before we begin our coverage, let us have a look at the final XI's for each country. Both teams are looking pretty strong.

As you can see, both teams going back to the basics with their strong teams of the past. Perhaps a bit of "don't want to let go" syndrome by Australia in selecting their team, but India has gone ahead and not picked their ex-captain Sourav Ganguly in the final XI. We will soon be at the stadium for live cricket coverage. Stay tuned!

Australia Win Toss and Elect to Bat
Welcome, finally, to live cricket action from the MCG. Ricky Ponting announced his squad, and much to the surprise of cricket fanatics and experts around the world, he announced an Aussie team with 5 specialist bowlers. Ponting selected 4 fast bowlers and Warne. It was an unprecedented move, and shows the respect the Australians show for the Indian batting line-up. To follow up this weird decision, Ponting also elected to bat first in overcast conditions--perfect for swing. 'Why not use the pace quad?', one may ask. Dravid, meanwhile, announced a team that matched all pre-match speculation. More updates to come at lunch.

Australia struggling at lunch
Australia are struggling at lunch after electing to bat first on this bowler's paradise. Zaheer got India off to an awesome start by picking up Hayden in the first over itself. He then followed it up by picking up the Aussie captain soon after. After a crippling start, Clarke and Langer slowly and steadily got the Aussie's back on task. Just as they were starting to flow, Harbhajan picked up the vital wicket of Justin Langer. Damien Martyn then came and played a flying cameo before miscuing a sweep off the Turbanator. At lunch, the match is excitingly poised with Australia's last recognized batting pair at the crease, and Clarke looking very settled.

Let's look at some highlights...

India dominating at Tea
At Tea on Day 1, India have dominated the Australian batting and dismissed them for 148. The Australians will have been very, very disappointed with their batting performance after their captain chose to bat first under overcast conditions. The Australians were crippled with early wickets in the first session of the day, and were never able to recover. Apart from a few decent starts from Clarke and Langer, none of the Aussies ever got in. Tight bowling from the Indians forced the Australians to go for bad shots and lose their wickets. However, the 5-prong Australian bowling attack now has even more reason to justify their selection as they must dismiss the long Indian batting line-up quickly. Let's have a look at the cards and the highlights.

Good team you've selected ofr India there. Give a game to Dinesh Kaarthik, it's good you selected him as now the whole of India is after "Dhoni the Great." I myself am not a fan of Dhoni and just waiting for him to be the water boy.

^ Well, Dhoni's real-life performances are certainly not suggesting that to occur anytime in the near future.

Rain dominates Evening session
Rain prevented much play from happening in the last session of the first day. Only 2.1 overs were bowled, when the skies opened up at the MCG. India went to stumps at 8/0 at the end of Day 1, trailing the paltry Australian total by 140 runs. They will be looking to make good progress tomorrow morning and taking a big lead to put pressure on the top team in the world. That's all for today's coverage.
