Ideas for Ashes Cricket 2010

I was told an interesting story about this. Basically that they submit the likenesses to the ECB or whoever the license holder is to get the OK. Sometimes they'll be told they need to improve, and other times the likeness is given the green light.

A problem can arise where a likeness which the art dept. are not totally happy with gets sent for verification, and the license holder gives it the OK. At this point, they cannot change it, so something like that might have happened with Flintoff.

Hmm, the ECB mucking up? its a lot easier to believe than some professional graphics designer producing such a poor quality face for Fred. :rtfl

Its just so offputting when you see a life-like KP and Ponting and then a cancer patient looking Flintoff right next to them

Career Mode like Fifa.
Proper Seasons and stat tracking through series.
Better AI. The AI in Ashes 09 was so poor. It carried over from previous Cricket games. I hope if ever Ashes 10 is made, the AI gets the priority.
I do not care about graphics but I will like to see players likeness for all the international players.
Presence of Domestic competition will be a welcome addition.
I am most certain that a very few of above will ever realize, but all of us cricket games fans have been wanting for a better cricket game for so many years :noway
Lets hope, we get a decent cricket game next year.

There are however, a certain number of problems and limitations with it. The main issue I can think of is getting power differences in there. You could say that the speed/distance you move the bat stick controls the power, but the amount of travel in one of those sticks is small, and might make it very hard to control. In EA's game you could play gentler shots by moving the shot stick a lesser distance, but I don't think anyone did because your natural tendency is to move it the entire way.

It should allow you to play some creative shots, like putting your foot out towards the off side and hitting over mid-wicket, for example. But what about a sweep shot compared to a mid-wicket drive? How do you tell it it's a flat-bat shot instead of an upright bat shot?

This is all stuff you can solve with extra button presses, but it might just be getting way too complicated, once you have buttons for power differences, lofting, etc.

I'm still thinking about it, so hopefully I can come up with a way to work it so I can implement it for my dissertation, and then license it to TG! ;)

Yeh, the power function in the century stick was poor. I do think that the way to go would be to use button presses. For example on the PS2 controller, we could the BLIC controls of Square for a block or nudge, X for an aggressive shot and O for a loft. One of the shoulder buttons could be used in addition to signal an "alternate" shot like a sweep, reverse sweep or scoop shot.

I thought I saw some mention player sizes but I can't find it now. Anyway, this is something else that would dramatically add to the gameplay. Say you are batting against Steve Harmison and Fidel Edwards (I know, not likely...). With one everything is going to be up around your ribs and neck, whereas Edwards is a shorter, more "skiddy" bowler. The last time (and indeed the first time!) we saw different player sizes/heights was Cricket 2004 and it made a difference to that game.

Yes, it could be a good touch to have different bowler sizes having a different impact. Someone like Steyn is average height but delivers from a low trajectory and such a system could replicate the problems that it creates.

Limit full balls to two an over.

The realism is that a bowler could bowl six full balls in an over. However, sometimes when you try a yorker, it turns out as a low full toss which can be easy to hit, or a half volley, which is fodder or even a length ball, if the muscles completely misfire. Such a feature should not be too hard to implement.

Personally, I think the aiming marker should remain, along with the execution meter. There should, however, be more of an emphasis on 'bowling well', not just 'bowling good balls'. For example, if you're bowling swing, your aiming marker should signify the original line of the ball rather than its final pitch point. Then, you can aim on leg stump and try to swing it past off. If you get the execution wrong, you bowl down the leg side and concede easy runs/bowl a wide, etc.

Great idea. These are really the sort of tidbits that can move a game onwards.

I also had an idea about playing the moving ball....

Any ball moving away from the batsman (away cutter or away swinger) should have the timing window for the shot move slightly earlier, to increase the chance of an outside edge, an the other way around for an inswinger. This would mean, again, that the player has to learn how to bat in a deeper way, rather than just pressing a direction and a button at the right time.

Also, it would mean that the bowler would have more of a chance to work a batsman over, with say 3 inswingers to 'settle' the batsman's timing, and then the away swinger which has an earlier window, leading to an outside edge.

This movement of the timing window could be made less/more for different difficulty levels, ball newness, execution quality, etc.

I'm not sure how this would work for spin. Maybe the same. Maybe not.

It really would be nice though if the bowler could actually out-do the batsman. At the moment, you kind of bowl and hope the batsman doesn't just smash it, and there's not much you can do to really try and prize him from the crease. I think more complex yet subtle differences like this could create a nice battle between bat and ball.

Another cracker of an idea.

all valid points are discussed here...!

Codemasters have all above the ability & requirements to take game to next level... still I love BLC'99! Also latest Ashes was look-wise so amazing & appealing than any other cricket game, except few bugs...

All the best for Codies to develop next Cricket Game, why not you try in name of Latest Fever "IPL"? :happy :hpraise :clap

A few of these may have been mentioned before.

1. Different batting styles. (Aggressive, Moderate, Defensive, Tailender)
For the aggressive player the shots should be slogger style shots and the
batsmen should gain "extra" confidence when executing those aggressive
shots correctly. The same for the other batting styles.

2. The meat and toe of the bat should some how come into play. Like if
you're chasing a wide one it hits the toe and just drops dead.

3. Proper player statistics and tracking.

4. A "Be a pro" style season mode revolving around your player. This should
last for 4 years and end once you lead your team to a world cup victory.

5. The use of both analogue sticks for batting. Left - Direction, Right - move
player left, right and in and out of crease.

6. Proper T20 style intros and player stats HUD when a new batter comes in

7. More realistic player movements

8. The bowling marker disappears as soon as the bowler gets to the crease
to make batting more challenging

9. Have different game modes. (Arcade and Authentic) Arcade being an
easier unrealistic mode which any person can enjoy. And authentic for the
true cricket fan. (Proper physics and realistic bowling, batting, scores,
tactics, etc)

10. Edges should fly to the keeper and slips.

11. Fielders should dive along the boundary

12. A history mode. Play some of the greatest matches. (438, Saf v Aus 99
Semi-final, the 2006 Ashes test, etc)

13. Unlock legends such as Bradman, Viv Richards, etc.

14. Commentators change during games.

15. Commentators should commentate in their own country or when their
team is playing.

16. Proper replays and camera angles that change when the ball is hit
instead of just following the ball

17. Maybe the introduction of Hot Spot and the Referal system

18. IPL mode

19. Proper Licenced players and tourniments

20. Players actually emerge from the pavillion

21. Licenced umpires. (Billy Bowden, Rudi, Simon, Asaad, Aleem, etc)

22. Should get commentators to commentate on a live game instead of
reading scripts. This will give the game a more realistic feel to it. Like Bill
Lawry's trademark "Bang Four", "You Beauty", "It's All Happening At The
G", and my favorite, "Hussey's The Key Here"

23. Have Tony Grieg etc. do a pitch report and maybe show the groundsmen
working on the field and the players training at the beginning of the match

24. Being able to change your opening batsman before an innings, as well as being able to retire a batsman.

25. And just for fun and realism, Rain, Streakers, Side Screen Failures, and
the Gatorade truck for drinks breaks
