PROTEAS STRUGGLE IN TOUR MATCH

South Africa have started their tour of India in poor form by struggling against Delhi at the Feroz Shah Kotla. Their captain Mithun Manhas starred in their first innings with 117 off 164 balls. Aakash Chopra, with 97, and Rajat Bhatia, with 86, also contributed strongly. Andre Nel took 4/73 for the tourists. Virender Sehwag, who is likely to open the batting for India in the first Test match, made 42. Delhi batted for 128.5 overs for 466 all out.

Makhaya Ntini was the only player not to score in double figures in South Africa's first innings. Amongst many starts, only Johan Botham with 72, Hashim Amla with 65 and Jacques Kallis with 53 made anything of significance. Indian hopeful Ishant Sharma was wicketless as South Africa were bowled out for 398.

Delhi then batted for just 42 overs before declaring on 144/1 in the hope of getting a result out of the game. Sehwag was again out in the 40s, this time for 46, but Chopra added an unbeaten 65.

Needing 213 to win, South Africa attempted to bat too aggressively. At one point, they were 38/4, but 54 from Herschelle Gibbs and 51 not out from Kallis steadied the ship. The umpires called time on 178/6, and the match was drawn. Ishant Sharma did impress in this innings, however, with 4/45.

Delhi 1st innings: 466 all out (Manhas 117, Chopra 97, Bhatia 86)
South Africa 1st innings: 398 all out (Botha 72, Amla 65, Kallis 53)
Delhi 2nd innings: 144/1 declared (Chopra 65 not out)
South Africa 2nd innings: 178/6 (Gibbs 54, Kallis 51 not out)
