The ongoing discussion over the future of the ICC Champions Trophy took another twist when the Indian board (BCCI) made it clear that it will not take part in the one scheduled for 2008.

Earlier in the month the BCCI made fairly clear signals that it did not support the ICC fund-raising concept which it believed reduced its own earning potential.

"We're not free in October in 2007, 2008 or 2009," BCCI vice-president Lalit Modi told reporters on Monday. "We have made our position clear to the ICC many times. If others want to play, they can, but why should we play in October?

"We've not signed any agreement to play in future editions and we've made our position very clear to the ICC many times."

The comments will be a major blow to the ICC as effectively without India, who are one of the major revenue drivers, the tournament is unlikely to go ahead.

This is the latest development in a clear strategy change by the Indian board seemingly putting it in direct conflict with the ICC. The BCCI has also questioned the ICC's Future Tours Programme and suggested that countries be allowed to arrange their own schedules.

What in a hell India is thinking about. What is the BCCI is up too.

The BCCI is correct and the ICC will surely now derelict the ICC Champions Trophy. It is a waste of space and is useless. But the BCCI are being very greedy recently talking about massive revenue if they verse Australia each year instead of participating in ICC events. Now I think the ICC will be influenced to either make it into a twenty20 championship or scrapping the whole tournament out of the calendar.

BCCI dont get much from an ICC scheduled event. But if the series is not ICC affiliated, then the respective home board gets a lot of revenue (money)! Since India are a major cricketing powerhouse now, they are now assured that if they back out of the Champions Trophy, the Champions trophy wont go ahead due to a big lack of sponsors, etc. So its like India have been waiting to backstab the ICC by making such a cunning move! They are trying to earn as much as they can with Indian cricket!

I m actually in support for this. Afterall the ICC can't just make calendars for their sake. Look back at the recent ICC Champions Trophy in England. It was nothing sort of tournament, wrongly planned in winters and almost all the teams had tired players. No wonder West Indies won it from nowhere cause everybody else was exhausted from International Cricket.
And as I learned recently its not profitable to cricket boards than whats the point in them supporting it. I have an idea, instead of ICC Knock out , host a 20-20 world cup which would be profitable to everybody and will complement the 50 overs world cup too.

Actually nothing wrong with it. Obviously I don't know how much of that money is spent in improving Domestic situation in India but more money is good.
BCCI doesn't have to play Aus every year; Australian Board won't agree to that.
The only viable solution is to make it a 20-20 world cup and teams start playing 20-20 internationals regularly and also being included(3 match series) in every tour. That would certainly gain some more fan-following in western countries and we might end up with 15-20 international teams.
Come on now, its what the fans want!!

I wish the 20-20 doesnt gain too much of importance over the 50 over and the test match versions. 20-20 is just slogging, nothing else! It dilutes the skill part of the game! How would a bowler feel if the batsmen slog at him almost every ball?

Yea Sai. You're right but Indian haven't played 20-20 before. I think they should have include a 20-20 in England touring India.

I think if India has backed out of it then it will die a slow (but sure ) death.

Remember Sharjah anyone.

Now I know I wont be watching the Champion Series.
Well...maybe in 2008 for Bangla! :p

Well there goes the Champions Trophy. I can't see it surviving with India as they basically are cricket. It doesn't help when the format isn't a major hit. You could just survive India not being in the WC but not the Champions trophy.

I don't think blaming BCCI entirely for this is fair. Sure, the BCCI are money-minded, greedy and do not do a good job in improving the cricketing infrastruture in India and all the other stuff. But, one has to realize that the Champion's trophy is played during the month of October which is a festive season in India with many festivals like Dasara, Diwali falling during this time. People get bonuses and spend money during this time of the year. Almost all of Champion trophy proceeds goes to ICC and BCCI does not get anything. So, at the best time of the year where BCCI can make profit by staging India-Pak or India-Aus series, why would they play Champions Trophy and not make any money at all? Would Australia play the Champions Trophy during the Boxing Day test match??

It also raises a good question here. If India alone backs out of Champion's trophy, and rest all good teams participate, then who will India play during this time?? It makes me think there are other cricketing boards involved here who also want to get rid of Champions Trophy but BCCI has made the first move.

I feel the Champions trophy dilutes the importance of the World Cup which occurs every 4 years! I also feel the Champions Trophy should be erased out of the cricketing calendar!

Lets first see the future of the Champions trophy now that India have backed out! we have to worry abt who India play during 2008 Champions Trophy only if the trophy goes on! if it doesnt, we have lot of options. If it does, we will have some minnow teams to play against (only 8 teams qualify for the champions trophy!)

what if they are the best Team in 2008-09 and they still wont play ??

NO they won't even if they are the best team in 2008-09.
I think the ICC will have the scrap the tournament as the sponsors will back down with India not playing in the tournament.
